WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – One newcomer and one returner paced the Purdue women’s golf team on the opening day of the season. Arkansas State transfer Ashley Kim and sophomore Lauren Timpf finished 1-over through the first 36 holes of the Boilermaker Classic at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.

As a team, the Boilermakers find themselves in fifth place at 13-over, 11 shots back of Ole Miss. Purdue led the field in pars (116) on its home course (Kampen-Cosler) after the opening day of the season.

Timpf started her sophomore season with her best round as a Boilermaker, carding a 3-under 69 in the morning. She started her tournament bogey free through the first 10 holes, which included her first birdie of the season at the par-4 seventh. Three birdies through a four-hole stretch on the back nine (Nos. 14-17), followed by back-to-back pars, secured Timpf’s first career round in the 60s for the Old Gold and Black. She carded a 76 (+4) in the second round, ending her day with a birdie to sit in a tie for ninth on the individual leaderboard heading into the final round.

Making her Purdue debut, Kim recorded a team-high eight birdies on Monday. She birdied four par 4s in the opening round to counter four bogeys for an even-par 72. The junior transfer was 2-under through 16 in the afternoon, but the final two holes prevented her from firing an under-par round.

Samantha Brown began her sophomore season with a 75 (+3) before shaving three strokes off her first round score for a team-best 72 (E) in the second round. The Westfield, Indiana, native finished strong with birdies on three of her last four holes. That included a birdie on the par-4 18th, which played as the toughest hole on the course.

Freshman Luana Valero’s day was highlighted by a near hole-in-one in the first round. After acing the par-3 fifth in qualifying a week ago, the Colombian almost did it in her first official collegiate round. Her tee shot landed inches short of the pin, leading to an easy, tap-in birdie. Valero carded a 73 (+1) in the opening round to contribute to the team’s score.

The Boilermakers look to move up the leaderboard Tuesday (Sept. 2), which begins with a 9 a.m. ET shotgun start. Purdue is paired alongside Xavier (+7) and Kent State (+10).
