WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Baseball's final road trip of the Big Ten season doubles as the Boilermakers' biennial trek to Bloomington for a series at Indiana as the rivals meet in the all-important month of May for the third consecutive season.
First pitch at Bart Kaufman Field is set for 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday. The series finale on Mother's Day will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
Both teams are playing well entering the penultimate weekend of the regular season. The Boilermakers have won five of their last six dating back to the 20-run outburst in Champaign on April 27. That's their best stretch since also winning five of six from March 12-22. They're 5-1 vs. in-state rivals this season after rolling past Ball State 14-4 Tuesday at Alexander Field.
The Hoosiers rebounded from a series sweep at the hands of first-place Iowa by winning all four games last week, sweeping Abilene Christian in Texas as part of their open weekend in the Big Ten schedule (IU did not have a midweek game this week). Like Purdue, Indiana has three series victories in Big Ten play this year – all at home and two of them sweeps (Ohio State and Michigan State). The Hoosiers had an opportunity to win four other Big Ten series but dropped rubber games at Penn State, at UCLA, vs. USC and at Illinois.
A year ago, the Hoosiers scored four times in the ninth inning to steal the rubber game at Alexander Field, becoming the first road team to win a series between the rivals since Purdue took two of three in Bloomington in 2010. The teams also squared off at the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2012, with IU scoring eight unanswered runs across the fifth and sixth innings to advance 8-6.
The Boilermakers are 2-17 at Bart Kaufman Field since the ballpark opened in 2013, a mark that includes two neutral-site games at the 2017 Big Ten Tournament. Seventeen of the 28 meetings in the series since 2013 have been played in Bloomington.
Purdue also went to Bloomington for the penultimate weekend of the season two years ago and losing all three games helped keep the Boilermakers out of the eight-team Big Ten Tournament. The schedule for the final two weekends of Big Ten play is a carbon copy this year, with Purdue visiting IU and hosting Nebraska. The Boilers trail Michigan State by one game in the standings for the final bid to the expanded 12-team Big Ten Tournament. Though they did not play each other this season, Purdue is likely to win a potential tiebreaker vs. MSU based on records vs. common Big Ten opponents (which is still officially TBD). But coming home without at least one victory this weekend in Bloomington makes pulling even with the Spartans by May 17 a much more difficult task.
