WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Swimmers visit the Lake Michigan shoreline for Friday's season-opening meet, joining three Michigan-based universities for the third edition of the Be Better Invitational.

The Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics club and the Holland Aquatic Center are serving as hosts of the one-day October showcase this year. While Purdue will have swimmers in attendance for the first time, the University of Michigan, Calvin University and Hope College are all founding members of the Be Better Invitational.

It's contested as a non-scoring exhibition while featuring a pair of mixed-gender relays as well as other unique (and fun) events like a 7x25 mystery shootout and 50 freestyle underwater with fins. Springboard diving will also be contested but the Purdue Divers opted not to attend.

Renovations at the Holland Aquatic Center were completed in 2023 and the facility now features a 22-lane 50-meter pool and five-lane 25-meter pool for warmups and diving. The spectator capacity was also increased to 800.

Holland is the hometown of the late Ian Miskelley, a former University of Michigan swimmer. The meet was founded in the fall of 2022 and contested in Grand Rapids (2022) and Ann Arbor (2023) the first two years, featuring Hope College, Calvin University, Davenport University and the Wolverines. It is held as a benefit meet supporting the Be Better Foundation, which was started by Miskelley's parents after his death in 2020. The Be Better Foundation seeks to promote mental health awareness.

The Boilermakers are opening their season in the state of Michigan for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign when they competed against Michigan and Michigan State at an outdoor meet in East Lansing on an unseasonably cold early-October Friday.

Purdue's rosters feature 10 Michigan natives, including nine on the women's team. Among that group, juniors Ashley Lund and Abby Marcukaitis as well as newcomers Grace and Kathryn Ackerman are all Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics alumni. The Ackerman sisters joined Purdue this summer, Grace as a freshman and Kathryn as a graduate transfer from the University of Michigan. Kathryn was the top finisher in all four legs of a 4x100 individual medley event contested at the Be Better Invitational last season. She also helped Michigan win the 200 medley relay at the meet in October 2022.

The Boilermakers open their home schedule and the Purdue Divers make their season debut next weekend (Oct. 12) when the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center hosts the annual Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate, featuring teams from all across the state.
