WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Football completed the eighth day of fall camp on Friday (Aug. 9) as the team continues to prep for year two of the Ryan Walters era.
Associate head coach and wide receivers coach Cory Patterson spoke to the media after practice, joined by the wide receiver duo of Jahmal Edrine and Jaron Tibbs. Patterson, now in his second year as coach of the Boilermaker receiving corps, emphasized his excitement about a position group that features so many newcomers and a handful of familiar faces.
"What I like about it is you've got some strong leaders in that group," Patterson said. "You've got a couple of guys who are more spokesman types. You've got a couple of guys, like Jahmal Edrine, who just go to work. He's not going to say a lot, but will just come out here and put in the work every day. So, I think it's a great mixture of guys. You don't have any guys with egos and stuff like that. Those guys are working hard, playing hard and all playing together. We'll see how that continues to grow."
Edrine, a junior from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, spent three seasons at Florida Atlantic before transferring to Purdue in 2023. Named to the Comeback Player of the Year Watch List earlier this week after missing his first season as a Boilermaker due to injury, Edrine is looking to bounce back and become a primary target for the Purdue offense.
"I would just say more preparation for my body," Edrine said when asked about what he gained from a year off the field. "More preparation every day, taking accountability into what I'm doing every day, how many miles I'm putting on my body in the offseason… Always, of course, you want to take every rep as your last rep. Every time you come out here, you don't want to ever take it for granted."
A sophomore from Indianapolis, Tibbs appeared in eight games as a true freshman for the Boilermakers in 2023. He echoed Patterson's message about the wide receiver group having a wealth of depth coming into the season.
"I'd say last year we had a lot of good guys, but this year we've got a lot more just top to bottom," Tibbs said. "We can be as good as we want to be. It's just how much we do, how much we stay locked in and how many plays we make."
The team will wrap up the second week of fall camp after another practice on Saturday (Aug. 10). Tickets are still available for the home opener against Indiana State on Aug. 31 in Ross-Ade Stadium.
