CONWAY, Ark. – Despite Purdue's three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning by freshman Julia Gossett, the Purdue softball team fell short in a 6-7 decision to South Dakota State. The difference-maker came in the Jackrabbits' four home runs, which accounted for six of their runs.
With the result, Purdue moves to a 6-4 record while South Dakota State improves to 8-6.
Purdue fought to the very last pitch, registering a three-run homer by Gossett, her first of her collegiate career in the seventh inning. The final out of the game came with a full count, testing South Dakota State's pitching to the limit.
Senior outfielder Kiara Dillon registered her first multi-run game of the season, recording two runs after making base on a single and hit-by-pitch. Dillon closed the game with one hit, one walk and a .368 batting average.
The Boilermakers took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, posting four hits and two runs in the frame, including a double by Dillon and RBI singles by Tyrina Jones and Sage Scarmardo.
South Dakota State responded with five runs in the fifth inning, which included a pair of home runs to put the Boilermakers behind.
Purdue committed one error, which led to one of South Dakota State's runs and was out-hit, 9-12. It was the most hits by an opponent this season.
