Rain Shortens Opening Day of Tournament Play

SARASOTA, Fla. – The opening day of the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational proved to be anything but sunny, as rain pounded Palm Aire Country Club and the entire state of Florida. Purdue Women's Golf and the rest of the field were limited to just 18 holes instead of the originally scheduled 36 for Sunday, playing in rain throughout the day and increasing the difficulty of the par 72 Champions Course.

With the tournament shortened by one round, the Boilermakers find themselves in sixth place (+12) with 18 holes remaining on Monday. On a day where conditions were tough, Purdue ranked second in the field in par-4 scoring (+10).

Jocelyn Bruch led Purdue with an even-par 72, her team-best eighth round of par-or-better this season, to sit in a tie for eighth on the individual leaderboard and only two shots back of the leaders. She began her day with a birdie at the par-4 second before giving it back at the third. Her round featured a trio of birdies to go along with three bogeys and a team-high 12 pars.

Momo Sugiyama added a 75 (+3) to crack the Top 20 heading into the final round, while Natasha Kiel carded a 76 (+4). Kiel matched Bruch with a team-high three birdies on Sunday, including two through her first four holes.

Like Bruch, Ashley Kozlowski started her day with a birdie. She made another one on the par-5 14th and contributed a 77 (+5) to the team score.

Only four shots back of second and nine shots behind the leaders, Purdue has 18 holes to make up ground and finish strong. The Boilermakers will be paired with Georgia Southern (+10) and Tennessee (+11) when the shotgun start begins at 8:15 a.m. ET Monday morning.
