Softball Splits Day 2 in Georgia

The Purdue softball team split Day 2 of the Red & Black Showcase, falling 6-1 at No. 6 Georgia before downing South Dakota, 5-1.

ATHENS, Ga. – The Purdue softball team split Day 2 of the Red & Black Showcase, falling 6-1 at No. 6 Georgia before downing South Dakota, 5-2.
 
The Boilermakers ended the day with a nine-hit performance vs. the Coyotes, bringing the day's total to 14.
 
Freshman Moriah Polar scored in each of the games and led the team with three hits on the day. The Boilermaker has recorded a hit in every game this season.
 

Game 2: Purdue 5, South Dakota 2
An exciting game saw nine Purdue hits by eight Boilermakers, an effort led by third baseman Jade Moy's two.
 
All five of Purdue's runs came with two outs. The game-winner came at the bat of Jordyn Ramos' single up the left field line in the fourth inning, scoring Khloe Banks.
  
Relief pitcher Julia Gossett secured the win for the first of her career. The freshman allowed two hits and struck out two batters over her 4.2 innings of work. Olivia Cainey closed the game for the Boilermakers, facing the final two Coyote batters for her first career save as Purdue led. Combined, the committee posted a 1.00 ERA.
 
Defensively, the Boilermakers caught one runner stealing, thanks to a throw by catcher Ryen Ross to second base for the out. Meanwhile, outfielder Jordyn Ramos came up with multiple catches, including a diving catch to end the third inning.

Purdue's first triple of the season was notched when Kiersen George came in the pinch hit during the fifth inning, her first at-bat of the year.
 
 
Game 1: Purdue 1, Georgia 6
 
Freshman outfielder Moriah Polar scored Purdue's lone run in the sixth inning when Sage Scarmardo earned the walk with the bases loaded. Polar led the team with two hits, while Scarmardo, Kiara Dillon and Khloe Banks each added a hit in the game.
 
The Boilermakers posted five hits in the loss while allowing six by the Bulldogs. Eight Boilermakers were left stranded.
 
Madi Elish (0-1) made her first appearance of the season in the circle and tossed the first 3.1 innings, allowing one walk before Kendall Klochack entered in relief to close out the game.
