ATHENS, Ga. – With the result coming down to the final play of the game, the Purdue softball squad nearly produced a tied game in the seventh inning. The Boilermakers had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh inning before No. 6 Georgia turned a line drive into a double play to take the game, 1-5. Purdue fell to 3-2 on the season with the result, with both losses coming to the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs on their home field.
 
The difference-maker was a grand slam by Georgia in the fifth-inning.
 
Purdue registered six hits and Georgia seven, with each team committing one error.
 
Purdue's run in the seventh inning was scored by pinch runner Kiersen George. Center fielder Kiara Dillon posted the RBI and led the team with two hits on the day, going .500 from the plate and making five putouts in the process.
 
The Boilermakers nearly had the 1-0 lead in the second inning after Olivia McFadden doubled to right center field. Kyndall Bailey came in to pinch run and rounded the bases after Dillon singled to the shortstop, but a throw was made just in time for Bailey to be called out at home.
 
Pitcher Emma Bailey made her first collegiate appearance and start, tossing the first two innings, allowing no runs, no walks and two hits with one strikeout. Olivia Cainey (0-1) came in relief with one runner on first and got the Boilermakers out of a bind in the third inning by leaving two runners stranded in scoring position. Jules Raymond closed out the final 1.2 innings, allowing one run.
 
Purdue will be back next week in Tampa, Florida for The Fonseca Memorial Tournament at USF, running Friday, February 16 through Sunday, February 18. Opponents will include UIC, Boston College, South Florida and Hofstra, with the Boilermakers playing the host twice.
