DOHA, Qatar – Purdue alumnus Brandon Loschiavo finished eighth in the 10-meter final at the World Aquatics Championships to secure an Olympic quota spot for the United State at the XXXIII Olympiad later this year in Paris.

Loschiavo moved up from 10th in the preliminary to ninth in the semifinal to eighth in the final. His list scores climbed from 409 to 413.65 to 453.35 in the process. The event featured a 45-diver field when it began with Friday's prelim.

Earlier this week, fellow Boilermaker Maycey Vieta qualified for the Olympic Games in the women's 10-meter event based on her performance for Puerto Rico at the World Championships. Loschiavo accomplished his goal of qualifying the U.S. for Paris, but will have to wait until June to officially become a two-time Olympian as the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June determine Team USA's qualifiers.

Joshua Hedburg also competed on 10-meter for USA Diving at the World Championships, placing 19th in the prelim. That finish is thought to fall near the cutline for a second Olympic quota spot for the U.S. In most Olympic years, the top two finishers in the individual diving events at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials qualify for the Olympics.

Loschiavo was also a finalist on the tower at the 2019 World Championships and 2020 Olympic Games.

Loschiavo scored at least 75 points on four of his six dives in Saturday's final, highlighted by a list-high score of 86.40 on a back 2 ½ with 2 ½ twists on his final dive of the championships.

In many ways, Saturday's semifinal round was more crucial because the 12 finalists in the event secured the Olympic quota sports for their countries. Three straight solid scores of 76.5, 75.6 and 72.15 across rounds 3 through 5 of the semi assured Loschiavo would advance among the 18-diver semifinal field.

Purdue alumni David Colturi (27-meter high diving for USA) and Jinq En Phee (50m and 100m breaststroke for Malaysia) are slated to compete during week two of the World Championships.
