WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Headlined by half a dozen divers that represent the past, present and future of the program, Purdue swimming & diving will be well represented again at the World Aquatics Championships, set for Feb. 2-18 in Doha, Qatar.
Three active Boilermakers – Daryn Wright (USA), Maycey Vieta (Puerto Rico) and Jaye Patrick (Latvia) – are all slated to compete in the women's 10-meter event beginning Sunday morning. Vieta is at the World Championships for the third year in a row. Alumnus Brandon Loschiavo (USA) is also among the men's 10-meter field in what will be his fourth appearance at the World Championships (2017, 2019, 2023, 2024).
National Letter of Intent signee Tyler Wills (Camel, Ind.) is followed Wright's lead in qualifying for the World Championships prior to enrolling at Purdue. Wright did so in the summer of 2022 and is at her second World Championships this month. Wills is paired with NC State's Bayleigh Cranford in Saturday's mixed 10-meter synchro event. They won gold together at the USA Diving Winter Nationals in December.
Alum David Colturi (USA) is slated to compete in 27-meter high diving as his fifth career World Championships, debuting in 2013. Colturi and David Boudia were teammates at Purdue from 2008-10. Boudia is once again serving among the USA Diving coaching staff at the World Championships. He was a five-time medalist at the World Championships during his decorated career.
Alumna Jinq En Phee (Malaysia), a two-time Olympian in the breaststroke events, is also entered in her third career World Championships (2015, 2019, 2024). Illness made her a late scratch at Worlds the last two years.
Formerly known as the FINA World Championships, the biennial international showcase became the World Aquatics Championships after FINA was rebranded as World Aquatics in December 2022. The coronavirus pandemic and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games to 2021 have led to the World Championships now being held in three consecutive years, including approximately six months before the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad this summer.
The top 12 finishers (the finalists) in the individual 3-meter and 10-meter events at the 2023 World Championships earned Olympic quota berths for their countries. Excluding those that have already qualified, the same bid structure is in place this month. Nations are limited to two individual entries and one synchro team per event at the Olympic Games. Diving has a total quota of 136 competitors (68 per gender) across its eight events – 3-meter and 10-meter, individual and synchro – at the 2024 Olympics.
For the United States, all Olympians are determined by the results at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June. Indianapolis is hosting the swimming trials and Knoxville hosts the diving trials.
