THE NOTES TO KNOW
• No. 3-ranked Purdue closes out its opening week of play as another defending conference champion visits Mackey Arena when Morehead State arrives for a Friday night tilt. The Eagles won the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season crown a year ago by three games, and were picked to win the title again this season. The Eagles were upset in the OVC Tournament in the quarterfinals by SE Missouri State.
• The Boilermakers have won 25 straight regular-season, non-conference games, dating to a Dec. 8, 2020, setback at Miami, Fla. The streak is the longest in the country by nine games (New Mexico - 16). A win over Morehead State would set the school record for the longest non-conference, regular-season winning streak in school history (25 -- Jan. 2, 1992 to Nov. 27, 1994).
• Purdue has won 21 straight non-conference home games, tied for the third-longest streak in Mackey Arena history. Its last loss came on Nov. 9, 2019, against Texas. The Boilermakers are 116-13 (.899) at home since the start of the 2015-16 season -- the sixth-best record nationally.
• Purdue had seven players make 3-pointers and 10 players scored at least five points in the win over Samford. The Boilermakers also had 10 players log at least 14 minutes of playing time and no player saw more than 22:26 (Braden Smith) of action.
• Purdue recorded 29 assists on its 34 made field goals against Samford. The 29 assists were the were the second most in a season opener in school history and the most since having 37 against LIU Brooklyn on Nov. 14, 1997.
• Meanwhile, Purdue's defense held Samford to just 25.0 percent shooting from the field, including 20.0 percent in the opening half. Purdue won the battle of the glass by 21 rebounds and the 53-point margin was the 11th-largest win in school history.
• In two season openers against Samford (2014-15 opener), the Bulldogs combined for 85 points and shot 32-of-134 (.239) from the field.
• The Boilermakers currently rank No. 1 nationally in offensive efficiency (117.8) and ninth in defensive efficiency (89.7). Early on, Purdue is one of four teams to rank in the top 10 in both categories (Purdue, Houston, Connecticut, Kansas).
• Purdue is also in the top 10 nationally in blocked shots per game (1st), 3-point percentage (4th), assists per game (6th), 3-pointers per game (6th) and field goal percentage defense (6th). Purdue recorded at least 10 blocks and nine steals in the same game for fifth time in school history (note later in packet).
• Purdue's No. 3 ranking marks its highest preseason ranking since the 1987-88 season (No. 2). Purdue has been ranked in the preseason top 10 for the second time in the last three years (2021-22 --> No. 7). It marks the eighth time in school history that Purdue has been ranked in the top 10 of the AP preseason poll. The last five times that Purdue has been ranked top 10, it has posted a 140-31 (.819) record.
• A year ago, Purdue became the first team since Wisconsin in 2015 to win an outright Big Ten regular-season title and the Big Ten Tournament title in the same season. Purdue became the first team in Big Ten history to win the regular-season title by at least three games and win the Big Ten Tournament in the same season. No team since Michigan State (1999, 2000) has won consecutive Big Ten Tournament and outright regular-season championships.
• Purdue's 59 wins since the start of the 2021-22 season are the sixth most in the country (Houston, Kansas, Arizona, Gonzaga, Duke). Among Big Ten teams, Wisconsin (46) and Iowa (46) are next on the list.
• Purdue is in search for its 26th Big Ten Championship, already owning the most Big Ten titles in league history. Should Purdue win the Big Ten title in 2024, it will mark its fourth title in the last eight seasons and back-to-back titles for the first time since 1994-95-96.
Matt Painter ranks fifth on the Big Ten's list for career wins with 414, needing just seven victories to tie Illinois legend Lou Henson for fourth (421). On the Big Ten games-only chart, Painter is seventh (209 wins), needing one win to tie Indiana's Branch McCracken (210).
