COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Purdue soccer team played to a 0-0 draw at Maryland on Thursday night at Ludwig Field in College Park, Maryland.
In both teams' second Big Ten game of the season, the Boilermakers (3-6-1, 0-1-1 Big Ten) had a strong second half, but could not find a goal on the Terrapins' (3-2-5, 0-1-1 Big Ten) home pitch. In its first Big Ten road game, Purdue earned its second shutout of the season while UMD held an opponent goalless for the sixth time in 2023.
The Boilermakers had eight shots, one on goal, and the Terrapins had 17 shots, six on target. The Old Gold and Black out-shot the home side 8-7 in the second half. Purdue owned a 5-4 edge in corner kicks, with all five coming in the final 45 minutes. UMD had 12 fouls to the Boilermakers' 10, and both squads were shown one yellow card.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kailey Kimball stopped all six shots she faced to earn her first career shutout. Senior midfielder Emily Mathews led the team with three shots, one on target. Five Boilermakers notched one shot in the contest.
Kimball's first save came in the third minute, as she tipped the ball out to set up a corner kick. Maryland's next shot didn't come until the 15th minute, and the Boilermaker defense forced the next three chances off target.
A blocked shot in the 31st minute preceded Kimball's second save in the 37th. That leaping save again set up a corner, and the Purdue back line blocked a pair of shots and UMD had another go off the post before the ball was cleared away.
The final save of the half for Kimball was in the 41st minute to preserve a goalless first half.
A Maryland shot wide began the second half before Mathews registered her first chance that was high in the 48th minute. Another good save by Kimball came four minutes later.
Purdue earned its first corner kick in the 57th minute, which set up a great chance for sophomore defender Sabrina Blount. However, her chance from the edge of the six was blocked and the visitors could not get another great look as the ball bounced around the box before it was cleared away.
Kimball stopped another shot in the 68th minute, and the Boilermakers quickly answered with a chance of their own, though freshman forward Lauren Omholt saw her shot go wide.
Freshman defender Zoe Cuneio had the first of four consecutive Purdue chances in the 75th minute, and Mathews' opportunity in the 80th minute followed. From the right side, Mathews had a shot on goal that was saved three minutes later. The second of two corner kicks in two minutes came before junior forward Megan Hutchinson had a shot that hit the post.
The final stop of Kimball's night was in the 85th minute. That was the sophomore's 50th save of her career in 13 career appearances and 10 starts.
The Boilermakers continued to fight for the game's first goal in the final minutes, though a shot by junior forward Gracie Dunaway that was wide ended up being the last chance of the game for either team.
Purdue's weekend on the east coast wraps up at Rutgers on September 24. Kickoff in Piscataway, New Jersey, is at 1 p.m. ET.
