WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Appalachian League Player of the Year honors for incoming infielder Logan Sutter headlined Purdue baseball's summer ball postseason accolades.
A third baseman from the Sacramento area and Folsom Lake College, Sutter led the Appalachian League in hits (58) and RBI (48) for the champion Johnson City Doughboys. The Appalachian League is part of Major League Baseball's Prospect Development Pipeline via the collaboration between MLB and USA Baseball.
In the Prospect League, rising sophomore Brody Chrisman and incoming transfer Enas Hayden were both recognized as postseason all-stars by the league coaches. Chrisman represented the Cape Catfish as an outfielder on the Western Conference team. Hayden, a pitcher from Indianapolis' Lawrence North High School, represented the Danville Dans on the Eastern Conference team.
All three players enjoyed breakout summers, putting up some impressive numbers.
• Sutter: .363/.427/.575, 7 2B, 9 HR, 48 RBI, 15 BB, 30 R, 4 SB in 41 GP
• Chrisman: .385/.472/.564, 17 2B, 5 HR, 55 RBI, 26 BB, 41 R, 15 SB in 49 GP
• Hayden: 3.34 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 14 App, 29 2/3 IP, 25 H, 13 BB, 45 K, 3 Wins, 1 Save
Sutter was top five in the Appalachian League in hits, RBI, home runs, batting average, slugging, OBP and OPS (1.002). He also pitched in five games, working 11 innings of three-hit ball with 13 strikeouts vs. two walks. He claimed the league's final pitcher of the week honor after facing the minimum over six shutout innings in his lone start of the summer on the mound.
Sutter represented Johnson City in the league's home run derby and all-star game in July. After helping the Doughboys win the league's West Division title with a 35-10 record and the one-game championship playoff, he also was a lock for the All-Appalachian League Team as the Player of the Year.
Chrisman and Hayden both helped their teams win division titles in the Prospect League and post the top overall records in their divisions for the summer.
Even after redshirting as a freshman at Purdue, Chrisman enjoyed a torrid start to the summer ball season as Cape Girardeau won 18 of its first 20 games as part of a team-record start. The Zionsville native finished second in the league in hits (69) and doubles as well as top 10 in RBI, batting average and OBP while producing a 1.036 OPS.
Hayden's numbers were highlighted by a 13.65 strikeouts per nine innings clip, which was on par with the league leaders (minimum 40 innings). He surrendered only 7.5 hits per nine in a generally hitter-friendly league and his 3.5 strikeout-to-walk ratio was also solid after only throwing 13 2/3 innings in the spring at Purdue Fort Wayne. Hayden's top outings of the summer featured him striking out nine over five innings of one-run ball on July 15 and fanning eight of the 14 batters he faced over three innings on June 19.
Rising sophomore Kade Ruffner was also an all-star in the Cal Ripken League in July. He was one of three Boilermakers playing in that league this summer.
Purdue's fall semester classes begin Aug. 20 and the Boilermakers' complete fall roster will be posted in conjunction with the beginning of the new school year.
