WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Another nail-biter at Bittinger Stadium against Penn State pushed the game to 12 innings before the Nittany Lions edged Purdue, 3-1.
The 12 innings tied the most frames in a game at Bittinger Stadium, the last of which was seen a year ago (vs. Rutgers, 4/30/22).
The Boilermakers scored first on Alex Echazarreta's home run to left field in the fourth inning. The shot marked the second consecutive game with a homer and the sixth in the last nine games for Echazarreta.
Penn State responded in the next inning with a run of their own, ensuing a six-inning stalemate.
In the ninth inning, Purdue was defensively sound, keeping the Nittany Lions from scoring, despite loading the bases with no outs, and keeping them loaded through the end of the frame. Second baseman Jade Moy was responsible for two of the three outs, recording a fielder's choice decision to throw home with the bases loaded and then earned the final out by catching a foul-territory ball.
After seven innings, Penn State held a 4-3 edge in hits, however the Boilermakers were out-hit 3-10 to end the game.
Madi Elish pitched the first 6.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks, Echazarreta (8-14) entered in relief to toss the next 5.2 innings, receiving the loss after allowing two runs in the 12th inning. Wimpee closed out the game, striking out her one batter faced.
With the result, Purdue (22-30, 5-17) has been eliminated from the Big Ten tournament.
Tomorrow's 1 p.m. ET game, will be the season finale for the Boilermakers. Immediately following the game, Purdue will honor the seniors. In addition to free admission, Purdue will be giving away free trading cards in honor of the seniors.
