CHICAGO – The Purdue track & field team opened competition at the Windy City Invitational on Friday in Chicago at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center at Gately Park.
Fifth-year Johnny Vanos had another strong performance to earn a runner-up finish in the weight throw, as he recorded one of the Boilermakers' four top-three finishes.
Vanos placed second thanks to a throw of 21.96 meters on his sixth and final attempt. That was his third mark of 21.50m or better on the day. In five meets competing in the weight throw in 2022-23, Vanos has finished first or second each time.
Junior LJ Hill joined Vanos with a second-place showing on Friday. In the long jump, Hill posted a mark of 7.38m, which came on his second attempt.
A pair of Boilermakers finished third in their event with collegiate-best marks. First was freshman Danny Affleck in the pole vault, as he cleared 4.84m for a personal-record by 0.21m. It's the best mark by Purdue in the event, indoors or outdoors, since the 2014-15 season.
The first race on the track was the open 5,000 meters, where sophomore Nathan Walker was third in 14:15.90. It's the fourth-fastest time in the Big Ten this season.
Fifth-year Camille Christopher advanced to the final in the 60m on Friday. In the prelims, she earned a time of 7.48 and followed it up with a final time of 7.47. Both would be collegiate-best times for Christopher prior to this season.
Personal-record times also were achieved by senior Jabari Bryant (400m, 48.53), junior Naomi Campbell (60m, 7.58), sophomore Owen Schafer (400m, 48.88) and freshman Jaylie Lohmeyer (400m, 55.81).
Competition in Chicago concludes on Saturday with both field and running events set to begin at 1:40 p.m. ET / 12:40 p.m. CT. The meet's final event, the 4x400 relay, is at 5:05 p.m. ET / 4:05 p.m. CT.
