WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – No. 19 Purdue baseball continues its stretch of 21 consecutive games played in the states of Illinois and Indiana with a four-game, home-and-home weekend series vs. an Illinois State team coached by a pair of former Purdue assistants.
The first two games of the series – Thursday at 6 p.m. ET and Friday at 3 p.m. ET – are set for ISU's Duffy Bass Field in Normal. Both teams then travel east to Alexander Field for Saturday and Sunday matinees at 1 p.m. ET. The Boilermakers have not played the same team in two different cities in the same weekend since taking on Bradley, the Redbirds' Missouri Valley Conference rival, in Peoria and West Lafayette in March 2011.
As the final undefeated team nationally, Purdue has won its first three home games for the first time since opening its 2012 home season 4-0. That was the final year at Lambert Field and also the last time the Boilermakers earned a national ranking in March.
Illinois State is led by former Purdue assistants Steve Holm (2017-18) and Wally Crancer (2014-18). They made the move west to Bloomington-Normal in the summer of 2018 after helping the Boilermakers qualify for an NCAA Regional as the runner-up in the conference standings and at the Big Ten Tournament. Purdue head coach Greg Goff was the third assistant coach for that memorable season, which featured a 21-2 hot stretch during the second half. Meanwhile, both teams' operations directions have also worked at both schools. After breaking Purdue's single-season saves record under Holm's guidance, Ross Learnard joined the ISU staff for two seasons before returning to West Lafayette in the summer of 2021. Ryan Henry currently handles operations for ISU after serving three years (2017-19) as a team manager while earning his bachelor's degree from Purdue.
