ESPN (Jason Benetti, Robbie Hummel, Myron Medcalf)
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 3-ranked Purdue Boilermakers hosts No. 13 Illinois on Tuesday night with a spot atop the league standings on the line. Illinois leads the Big Ten with a 10-2 league mark, while Purdue (and others) are a game behind in the loss column. A win over the Illini would give Purdue an important season sweep and be the Boilermakers' sixth win in a row and ninth in its last 10 league games after starting 1-2.
Purdue enters with a 20-3 mark, while Illinois is 17-5. Purdue has six quad-1 wins (6-2 record), while Illinois has five (5-3 record).
The contest will be televised on ESPN with Jason Benetti, Robbie Hummel and Myron Medcalf on the call. On the radio waves, Rob Blackman and Bobby Riddell will be courtside on the 22-station Purdue Radio Network and online on the Varsity Sports Network (app). Live stats will be provided on PurdueStats.com and updates will be provided on Purdue's official Twitter account (@BoilerBall).
THE NOTES TO KNOW
1) Matt Painter (18th season overall) won his 400th career game on Saturday vs. Michigan. Painter is now 50th on the active coaches wins list (400), but only two coaches ahead of him (TCU's Jamie Dixon, UCLA's Mick Cronin) have been a head coach fewer than 20 seasons.
2) Since the 2015-16 season, Purdue is 100 games over .500 (163-63). Purdue is one of 13 teams to accomplish that (two Big Ten teams; MSU).
3) Through Sunday's games, Purdue's 20 wins are tied for the fourth most in America (Auburn, Murray State - 22; South Dakota State - 21).
4) Since Feb. 1, 2021, Purdue is the only team nationally without a double-digit loss. Purdue's seven losses in that span have come by 1, 3, 9 (ot), 9 (ot), 2, 5 and 3 points. In regulation games only, Purdue's five losses in that span are 1, 3, 2, 5 and 3 points.
5) Zach Edey and Jaden Ivey were named to the Wooden Award late-season top-20 list. Ivey was tabbed one of 10 finalists for the West Award given to the nation's best shooting guard, while Edey is one of 10 finalists for the Abdul-Jabbar Award given to the nation's top center.
6) With the win over Michigan, Purdue became the first Big Ten program to amass 1,000 conference victories.
7) Purdue leads the Big Ten in scoring, field goal percentage, 3-point percentage, 3-pointers, rebound margin (also lead nationally) and assists.
8) Purdue leads the country in offensive efficiency (126.1) and has been held under 1.00 points / possession just once (Indiana - 0.98).
9) Purdue has trailed by double-digits in just three games this year (Villanova, North Carolina State, Indiana) and won two of them.
10) Since 2014-15, Purdue is 35-15 (.700) during the month of February, having won five straight games in the month, four by double-digits.
11) Since the 2014-15 season, Purdue (100-43) is the only Big Ten program to have won 100 conference games (MSU - 98; Wisconsin - 93).
INSIDE THE SERIES
• Tuesday's contest with Illinois marks the 194th meeting between the two teams with Purdue holding a 103-90 series advantage. Purdue snapped a 3-game skid to Illinois on Jan. 17, in a 96-88, double-overtime victory that many claim as the game of the year in college basketball (box score can be found later in packet).
• To show how competitive this series has been, the margin of difference in points scored in the 193 previous games is 27 points (Purdue 11,199; Illinois 11,172).
• Purdue is 9-2 under Painter at Mackey Arena against the Illini, having won seven of the last eight meetings. However, Illinois won the last meeting in Mackey Arena, 79-62 on Jan. 21, 2020.
• This will be just the third game between a ranked Illinois and ranked Purdue team during the Painter era (Feb. 8, 2009 and Jan. 17, 2022). Illinois won the first meeting, Purdue the most recent one.
• Illinois freshman Luke Goode and Caleb Furst are very good friends, playing AAU ball together since the second grade. When the two teams played in Champaign earlier this year, the parents rode together from Fort Wayne. In addition, Purdue Class of 2023 signee Fletcher Loyer and Goode both attended Homestead High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Spartans were No. 1 in the state and undefeated for much of Goode's senior season a year ago.
