WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue freshman guard Braden Smith has been named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week for his role in the Boilermakers' win over Marquette.
The Boilermakers are 3-0 and ranked No. 24 in the latest Associated Press Top-25 poll following their 75-70 win over Marquette in the Gavitt Games.
Smith was named the Freshman of the Week for the first time in his career after scoring 20 points with three assists and two rebounds in the victory over Marquette. He went 6-of-8 from the field, 3-of-4 from long distance and 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the victory. Smith helped the Boilermakers against Marquette's relentless pressure as Purdue had just six turnovers as a team, while Smith didn't have a turnover in the game's final 38 minutes.
He scored 15 of his 20 points in the decisive second half, including nine points in the final five minutes to lift Purdue to the victory.
Smith ranks second on the team in scoring at 10.7 points per game while contributing 3.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He is shooting 9-of-18 (.500) from the field, 5-of-11 (.455) from 3-point range and 9-of-10 (.900) from the free throw line.
