HOT START AT CLARION
Purdue traveled to the Clarion Open to start its season and Ersland's unit showed no signs of needing to knock off rust. The team came away with six champions, a first-place team finish, seven finalists and twelve placewinners.
Matt Ramos and Parker Filius won their titles outright, while the duos of Dustin Norris and Jacob Macatangay and Kendall Coleman and Nate Camiscioli shared their titles with each other once they reached the finals. Six more Boilermakers made the podium to give head coach Tony Ersland's team 240 team points, good for first place and 41 more than second place.
LAST TIME OUT The Boilermakers fell short in their first dual competition of the season, losing 23-13 to Rider last Sunday. Ramos, Coleman, Parkinson and Vanadia all won their matches with Vanadia claiming a major decision in his collegiate dual debut. Overall, four Purdue wrestlers made their first dual appearance for Ersland's young squad.
QUAD CONNECTIONS The Boilermakers have ties across multiple teams in this quad duals. A familiar face now patrols the bench for Cleveland State as Purdue fans will see the return of four-time NCAA qualifier Devin Schroder who now serves as an assistant coach for the Vikings. It is his first job after graduating from Purdue last year.
Coach Ersland and Northern Illinois associate head coach Dominick Moyer overlapped at Nebraska when Ersland was an assistant for the Cornhuskers staff that coached Moyer to three NCAA qualifications at 141 pounds.
SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED Purdue head coach Tony Ersland inked five new Boilermakers to national letters of intent last week on National Signing Day. He welcomed Joey Blaze, Greyson Clark, Ashton Jackson, Delaney Ruhlman and Cole Solomey to the Boilermaker family to make up what will surely be Ersland's sixth top-25 recruiting class.
Blaze and Clark highlight the class as the No. 17 and No. 33 ranked prospects respectively with five state titles between the two of them. Purdue is one of just nine schools to have at least two top-35 ranked signees. Jackson (No. 196), Ruhlman (No. 174) and Solomey are all Indiana kids who will stay home for their collegiate wrestling careers.
