THE NOTES TO KNOW
• After a season-opening 84-53 win over Milwaukee, the Purdue basketball team looks for a 2-0 start when Austin Peay visits on Friday.
• The Boilermakers are aiming for their second straight 2-0 start after last year's team opened the year 8-0 while ascending to the No. 1 national ranking in the AP poll in early December.
• However, Purdue has started 2-0 just three times in the last six seasons (2021-22, 2018-19, 2017-18).
• Purdue has won 15 straight non-conference games at Mackey Arena. The last non-conference home loss came on Nov. 9, 2019, against Texas (70-66), preventing Purdue from a 2-0 mark that season.
• The Boilermakers have won eight straight games in the month of November, with its last loss coming Nov. 26, 2020, vs. Clemson (81-70).
• Purdue's 53 points allowed to Milwaukee were the fewest allowed since giving up 40 against Omaha on Nov. 26, 2021.
• Against Milwaukee, Purdue recorded at least 10 steals and 10 blocked shots in the same for just third time in school history (Dec. 22, 2009, vs. SIU Edwardsville; Dec. 10, 1993, vs. Houston).
• Freshmen accounted for 32 points in the win over Milwaukee. Comparing to the 2020-21 season (Ivey, Edey, Gillis, Morton, Newman), that class scored 44 points in the season-opening win over Liberty.
• Purdue forced 21 turnovers against Milwaukee, its most forced turnovers since forcing 22 against Central Michigan on Dec. 28, 2019.
Braden Smith leads the country in steals per game (7.0), while Zach Edey is first in rebounds per game (17.0) and second in blocks (6.0).
Zach Edey has played 1,135 career minutes, averaging 27.7 points, 15.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per 40 minutes played in his career. Of players that have played at least 1,000 career minutes since 1980, Edey and LSU's Shaquille O'Neal (1990-92) are the only players to average at least 25.0 points, 15.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per 40 minutes played.
• Edey became the first Big Ten player since JaJuan Johnson in Feb. 2011, to have at least 12 points, 17 rebounds and 6 blocks in a game.
• Purdue has won 40 straight games when scoring 80 or more points (last loss: Dec. 15, 2018, vs. Notre Dame, 88-80).
• Purdue is 139-15 when winning both the turnover and rebound battles. Purdue was +10 in turnovers and +18 in rebounding vs. Milwaukee.
Matt Painter needs 15 overall victories to become the fifth coach in Big Ten history with 400 victories while at a conference school (Bob Knight, Tom Izzo, Gene Keady, Lou Henson).
• With the sellout against Milwaukee, Purdue has had a home sellout in 42 consecutive games. The last non-sellout came Jan. 3, 2019, vs. Iowa. Just two more games on the schedule have tickets remaining (New Orleans on Dec. 21; Florida A&M on Dec. 29).
• The Boilermakers own an 1,885 - 1,054 all-time record (.641), ranking tied for 11th with Arizona on the all-time NCAA basketball wins list. The 64.1 winning percentage is tied for 14th all-time.
• Purdue is in search of its 25th Big Ten Championship, having won two of the last six regular-season titles (2017, 2019). The Boilermakers are the all-time leader in Big Ten regular-season championships, two ahead of rival Indiana (22).
• Purdue has made seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the sixth-longest streak in the country. Purdue has accounted for four of the Big Ten's 11 Sweet 16 apperances since the 2016-17 season.
• Purdue has 10 players this season standing at least 6-6, the most in school history. Purdue's average height of its scholarship players is 6-7 1/4.
• The new capacity number for Mackey Arena is 14,876 after 72 seats were added during an offseason renovation. The sellout number will become the second-largest crowd(s) in Mackey Arena history after 15,108 fans somehow snuck in on Feb. 4, 2012, against Indiana.
