WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue soccer team concluded its 2022 season with a 3-1 loss to Maryland on Sunday at Folk Field.
On a sun-splashed afternoon, freshman forward Kayla Budish scored her fourth goal of the season, a game-tying goal in the 25th minute. The Boilermakers trailed 1-0 in the sixth minute, before Budish found the equalizer. However, the Terrapins regained the lead in the 30th minute and extended their advantage in the 66th.
Sunday's defeat came as Purdue returned home from a three-game roadtrip. In the final game at Folk Field in 2022, it marked the last time Purdue's seniors donned the Old Gold and Black kits.
The Boilermakers out-shot the Terrapins, 13-10, though UMD held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Purdue (3-11-3, 0-7-3 Big Ten) registered four corner kicks and Maryland (4-8-5, 3-7-0 Big Ten) earned five. The home side had nine fouls to the visitor's five.
Budish, sophomore forward Gracie Dunaway and sophomore midfielder Abigail Roy each had a game-high-tying two shots, while Budish and Roy were two of four Boilermakers with a shot on target. Senior goalkeeper Emma Tompkins played the final 45 minutes and made two saves.
Maryland took a 1-0 lead at 5:54, as Ava Morales scored from Catherin DeRosa on the first shot of the game.
The next opportunity for either team didn't come until the 24th minute, when sophomore forward Megan Hutchinson sent a chance high. Less than a minute later, at 24:34, Budish scored to even the game.
Near midfield, junior midfielder Emily Mathews sent a long through ball to a sprinting Budish. In a race to the ball between Budish and the Terp goalkeeper, Budish was just fast enough and chipped it over the diving keeper from just inside the 18-yard box. The ball bounced into the back of the net as Budish fell to the ground.
The fourth goal of the season for Budish tied the game at 1-1. Mathews earned her seventh assist of the season, tying her career-high set a year ago. It was the 16th assist of her career. Budish finishes the year second on the team with four goals and 10 points, while Mathews paces the team with seven assists and finishes third with nine points.
Senior defender Chloe Woodbeck had a chance saved in the 27th minute, before Maryland regained the lead at 29:24. Morales scored her second of the day, an unassisted goal.
Purdue had the final three shots in the half, including a strike by Mathews on a free kick that ricocheted of the crossbar. From 19 yards out, her chance just missed the top of the net. Freshman defender Sabrina Blount also earned a header off a corner kick that was saved.
The Boilermakers had six shots to the Terrapins' three in the first half, with a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. The home side earned three corners and held UMD to two.
The second half began with pressure early for Purdue, as Roy had a great opportunity in the second minute that was saved. Maryland had the next two shots, including one that was saved by Tompkins, who entered the match to start the half.
UMD earned a corner kick in the 61st minute and had a great look on net, but a Boilermaker defender cleared the ball off the line. UMD then added to its lead with a goal at 65:06 by Alyssa Poarch.
Tompkins made a great save in the 77th minute, as she leaped to tip the ball out on a shot from 25 yards out. Dunaway and fifth year midfielder Sydney Duarte both had chances blocked two minutes later, and sophomore forward Victoria Kevdzija had an opportunity go wide in the 82nd minute.
Budish had the game's final shot, which was off target with just under a minute left.
