WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue cross country team raced against a highly-competitive field at the Joe Piane Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana, on Friday morning.
Racing against numerous nationally-ranked teams in both the men's and women's blue division races, the Boilermaker women finished 17th as a team and the men were 18th. Senior Emma Tate led the women's squad, while sophomore Nathan Walker was the top finisher for the men.
Along with host-Notre Dame, the Joe Piane Invitational field featured top-25 teams Alabama, Butler, Michigan, Montana State, North Carolina State, New Mexico and Oregon State. More than 165 runners competed in both the men's and women's events on Friday at ND's Burke Golf Course.
Tate finished the 5k women's race with a time of 17:12.3 to place 64th overall. Junior Payne Turney was right behind her in 65th in 17:13.1, and sophomore Emma Squires was 82nd in 17:23.5. Senior Ellie Tate crossed the finish line in 17:44.8 to finish 109th and sophomore Lauren Bales was 118th in 17:51.7.
Freshman Katherine Rumsey was close behind in 17:51.8 to place 120th, and junior Caroline Jordan was 131st in 17:56.6, 131st. Additionally, junior Katelyn Wasson finished 145th in 18:07.4.
Walker ran the 5-mile men's race in 24:14.4 to finish 53rd overall. Junior Caleb Williams was closely behind him in 63rd with a time of 24:20.6. Junior Joey Kasch and sophomore Brady Yoder finished less than a second apart, in 100th and 103rd, with times of 24:40.5 and 24:41.4, respectively.
Senior Andrew Brandt crossed the finish line in 24:46.9 to place 114th, and junior Geno Christofanelli's 24:53.1 was 123rd overall. Junior Alex Frey registered a time of 25:00.0 to finish 130th, senior Bryce Hutchinson was 139th in 25:05.3 and freshman Jason Polydoris was 168th in 25.47.5.
Additionally, five Boilermakers competed in the open event. Senior Ian Shaw paced the men in the open 5 mile, as he was 12th in 24:47.8. Senior Ian Hunter was 31st in 25:13.0 and fellow senior John Pieper placed 37th in 25:20.5. For the women in the open 5k, freshman Sarah Maggio was 41st overall in 18:27.7 and fellow freshman Christel Elkins finished 64th in 19:13.1.
Up next is the penultimate meet of the regular season, as Purdue travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for the Weis Crockett Invitational on October 15. The Oklahoma State-hosted meet will be held at the site of the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
