Teams to play 14 or 15 innings regardless of score

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball is set for an extended Sunday scrimmage as the Boilermakers visit Louisville for a fall ball exhibition game.

First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium, where the Boilermakers have not played since April 2017. The teams are planning to play as many as 15 innings regardless of the score in an effort maximize opportunities for all players, specifically pitchers.

Sunday marks the first time that Purdue is leaving campus for a fall exhibition game since the NCAA changed the criteria on events played during the fall semester. Previously, any exhibition games vs. D-I opponents counted towards a team's 56-game total in the spring.

Meanwhile, the Boilermakers played Louisville every year from 2011 to 2017 – odd-numbered years in Kentucky, even numbered in West Lafayette – before the annual midweek matchup went on hiatus.

Purdue's upperclassmen and transfers with collegiate experience took the mound for Monday's open scrimmage at Alexander Field, which puts that group in line to have the first opportunities to throw Sunday and potentially work multiple innings. Returnees CJ Backer, Logan Danzeisen and Khal Stephen plus newcomers Jonathan Blackwell, Jackson Dannelley, Cal Lambert, Davis Pratt and Aaron Suval all pitched Monday.

After finishing the 2022 season as Purdue's Friday starter and taking the ball for the Big Ten Tournament game vs. Iowa, Backer was recognized as the program's first Pitcher of the Week honoree of fall ball. He was joined by newcomers Couper Cornblum (Hitter) and Jo Stevens (Defender) among the first trio of weekly honorees. Cornblum has been patrolling center field and Stevens has been holding down the hot corner.

Louisville was victorious vs. Miami (Ohio) in a fall ball exhibition game on Sept. 18 at Prasco Park in the Cincinnati area. The Boilermakers host Dayton on Saturday, Oct. 8 for their second of two exhibition games. It is also expected to feature more than nine innings.
