The Boilermakers face their first Big Ten competition on Saturday, as Purdue and host-Wisconsin will be joined by Illinois, Minnesota and Ohio State. Twelve field events, six men's and six women's, and 16 running events, eight men's and eight women's, will be contested between the five Big Ten programs.
DUO EARN BIG TEN HONORS
After producing some of the nation's best marks in their events last weekend, senior Johnny Vanos and junior Justin Becker were named Big Ten Athletes of the Week. Vanos earned the men's field accolade, and Becker collected the men's track weekly honor. The pair are recognized by the Big Ten for the first time in their careers.
Vanos won the weight throw at the Gene Edmonds Invitational on January 8 with a mark of 20.65 meters, as he continues to rank No. 6 in school history in the event. The throw is the best in the Big Ten and sixth-best in the NCAA this season as he earned his second weight throw victory in as many meets to open the season.
Becker registered two of the fastest sprint times in the nation on Saturday at Lambert Fieldhouse. He finished the 200-meter in 22.08, which was No. 6 in the country last week, and his 60 time of 6.88 was No. 7 nationally. Both were the fastest marks among Big Ten runners at a 2022-opening meet.
This week's two accolades match Purdue's total awards earned during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns. Last year's two honors both came during the outdoor season, one male and one female, and the two in 2019-21 marked the last time a Boilermaker was recognized indoors before this week.
LAST TIME OUT: GENE EDMONDS INVITATIONAL
Purdue won 13 events at the Gene Edmonds Invitational on January 8 at Lambert Fieldhouse. The Boilermakers added 16 runner-up finishes and claimed both first and second place in nine events. Eight of Purdue's wins came in field events and 17 personal-best marks were achieved.

NEXT UP: FIRST TWO-DAY MEET
Next weekend, Purdue competes at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. The team's first multi-day meet of the season begins on Friday, January 21, and concludes on Saturday, January 22.
