BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Purdue track & field team concluded the indoor regular season at the Big Ten Open on Saturday afternoon in Bloomington, Indiana.
The Boilermakers earned five first-place finishes and set six personal-best marks at Indiana's Gladstein Fieldhouse. In the final meet before next weekend's Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships, 10 men and eight women competed for Purdue against Indiana in seven men's and seven women's events.
"We had a small group that competed at Indiana today, with several kids that we needed to determine if they'll be making the travel squad for the Big Ten Championships," Purdue coach Norbert Elliott said. "The performances today gave us the chance to see where this group was at."
Sophomore Marcellus Moore won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.71 seconds for his second victory in the event in as many weeks. Moore's time is tied for the fourth-fastest in the Big Ten this year and would rank No. 7 in Purdue history if he didn't already own the fifth-fastest mark.
Junior Camille Christopher claimed the win in the 200 in 24.16. Her first win of the season, Christopher's time is the sixth-fastest in the conference in 2021 and would be 10th-fastest in school history if she wasn't already at No. 8.
Freshmen Brady Hawks and Nikia Smith also earned victories against the Hoosiers, both with personal-best marks. Hawks' win came with a jump of 1.97 meters in the high jump, while Smith's was in the 60-hurdles in 8.73 seconds.
Senior Jalil Brewer was the lone competitor in the shot put, and he earned a mark of 18.84 meters. The throw is the fifth-best in the Big Ten this year and would be No. 6 in the Purdue record books if he wasn't already at No. 3.
In the women's 60-meter dash, sophomore Kerris Roberts was second in a five-runner field with a time of 7.53 seconds. While she holds the seventh-fastest time in the event in school history, today's finish would be No. 10 on the list. Additionally, Christopher was third in the race in 7.61 seconds.
Sophomore Ian Hunter (800, 1:52.84) and freshmen Emily Kim (long jump, 5.25m) and Cierra Williams (400, 55.94) all notched personal-best marks. Additionally, sophomore Luke Upton (800, 2:01.55) and freshman Naomi Campbell (60, 7.80 and 200, 25.54), made their collegiate debuts.
Postseason competition begins next weekend at the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio, from Feb. 25-27. The three-day championship meet will be held at the Spire Institute.
