NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Purdue soccer team suffered its first loss of the season with a 1-0 defeat at Notre Dame on Thursday evening at Alumni Stadium in Notre Dame, Indiana.
The Boilermakers (2-1-2) were shut out for the first time this year as the Fighting Irish (4-0-1) used a 59th-minute goal to remain unbeaten.
Purdue had six shots, four on goal, while Notre Dame had 10 shots and five shots on goal. UND earned nine corner kicks to the Boilermakers' one. Senior forward Sarah Griffith registered a match-high four shots and two shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Marisa Bova made four saves, and her counterpart also stopped four shots.
In the opening 45 minutes, the Fighting Irish controlled much of the play. The home side outshot the Boilermakers 4-1, though both teams had one shot on goal. Notre Dame had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Bova's one save of the first half was one of her best, as she leaped to tip the ball out of play in the ninth minute. That set up UND's first corner kick, and the Boilermaker defense prevented a shot.
Ten minutes later came four Notre Dame corners in a four-minute span. However, Purdue allowed just one shot, which was blocked, off the set pieces.
Another blocked shot came in the 29th minute, which set up a corner, but again the Fighting Irish couldn't get a shot off.
The Boilermakers' one shot of the half was by senior midfielder Grace Walsh in the 37th minute. She sent a long ball in from approximately 25 yards away, but it was saved. Purdue then had another opportunity in the 40th minute on a cross in by senior midfielder Ally Mussallem, but the Notre Dame defense cleared it.
In the second half, UND had six shots to Purdue's five, while each goalkeeper made three saves. The Fighting Irish had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Boilermakers had a strong opening 10 minutes to the second half, highlighted by three Griffith shots. The first was high before the next two were saved.
Notre Dame then regained its offensive momentum, which led to the goal in the 59th minute. The goal, at 58:32, was scored by Olivia Wingate on a header from inside the six-yard box. Eve Wirtz earned the assist. Off a corner to the far side of the 18, Wirtz headed the ball back into the six to Wingate.
Two minutes after the goal, Bova made another save, and the defense blocked two shots several minutes later. Junior defender Lauren Holleran also had several good blocks and clears in the second half.
Purdue earned a corner kick in the 74th minute, which sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews took. On the ball towards the top of the 18-yard box, sophomore defender Nicole Kevdzija got a head on it, but UND's keeper made the save.
Bova made another stop four minutes later to keep it a 1-0 match.
In the last 10 minutes, each team had several chances in their final third. Griffith had one shot, which was wide, and the Purdue defense prevented Notre Dame from getting a shot off.
Up next, Purdue returns home to face Saint Louis on Sunday, September 5, at 1 p.m. ET at Folk Field. Admission is free for all fans at 2021 regular-season home matches.
