OMAHA, Neb. – Even though they were born 10 years apart, Purdue swimmers Coleman Modglin and Danny Tucker both finished among the five in an event Monday on the final night of Wave I racing at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Rising sophomore Coleman Modglin, 19, placed third in the A final of the 200-meter breaststroke. Alumnus Danny Tucker, 29, impressed with a fifth-place showing in the 50 free. Tucker was a two-time All-American and two-time silver medalist at the Big Ten Championships as a record-setting Boilermaker from 2011 to 2014.

Modglin won his heat and finished third of 35 overall in the 200 breast prelims. He was initially DQ'd for a non-simultaneous touch, but Modglin's coaches – Zionsville Swim Club's Eric Meyer and Purdue's Dan Ross – successfully appealed the DQ. Modglin improved on his prelim time (2:16.36) by 0.87 hundredths in the final, but was unable to move into the top two, which would have earned him a berth in Wave II of the Olympic Trials.

Tucker also improved on his prelim time (22.90) in the A final (22.83), moving up two places after finishing seventh of 94 in the preliminaries. He also won his prelim heat. Tucker was the 100-meter free champion at the 2013 U.S. Open. He held Purdue's program record in the 100-yard free until March when Nikola Aćin eclipsed the mark. Tucker continues to rank second all-time in the 50 free and was part of record-setting teams in the 200 and 400 free relays.

Modglin also finished 23rd of 84 in the 100-meter breaststroke Saturday. He cracked the Purdue all-time top 10 in both SCY breaststroke events as a freshman this season, moving into seventh place in the 200 (1:56.88) and 10th in the 100 (53.82). He sored in both events at the Big Ten Championships.

On the women's side, rising sophomore Hayley Pike also raced Monday evening in the finals-only 1,500-meter free. She placed sixth in her debut at the Olympic Trials.

The Boilermakers were also represented in Omaha by Masy Folcik, Ryan Hrosik, Sylvia Kobylak and Nick Sherman. Incoming freshman Lance LeSage also raced Friday in the 100-meter backstroke. Alumna Kaersten Meitz is set to race in the 200, 400 and 800 free at Wave II of the Olympic Trials, which opens June 13.
