SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Purdue has a pair of wrestlers set to compete in the NCAA Wrestling Championships Round of 12 on Friday night, with All-America honors on the line. Senior Devin Schroder is still alive in the 125-pound bracket, while sophomore Thomas Penola continues to battle at 197 pounds as the Boilermakers are in 22nd place after the quarterfinals and three rounds of consolation matches with 15.5 points.
Schroder's quarterfinal loss to top-seeded Spencer Lee of Iowa was closer than it appeared as Lee scored six of his 10 points in the final minute to account for the 10-2 gap. The Boilermaker senior nearly had a takedown in the first, which was stopped due to a potentially-dangerous position and Lee scored shortly after the restart, riding Schroder out for a 2-0 lead. Schroder chose a neutral start to the second and tied the match with a takedown, hitting a single-leg shot and finishing the takedown for two. Lee escaped to make it 3-2 after the first five minutes, and picked bottom for the final period. After a short ride to start the third, Lee scored a reversal and then turned Schroder for four back points, adding a riding-time point at the end of the match for the major decision.
Schroder moves into the Round of 12 in Friday night's Session 5, where he'll face Wisconsin's No. 19 seed Eric Barnett with All-America honors on the line. Barnett upset Schroder in the 2021 dual between the Boilermakers and Badgers, reversing Schroder to his back for a fall in Madison on Jan. 24.
Penola had to win twice in Session 4 to continue his tournament and came through, turning in a 6-1 decision over North Carolina's Max Shaw and edging out Iowa State's Marcus Coleman 3-2. After a scoreless first period with Shaw, Penola posted a takedown in the second and another in the third to advance. Against Coleman, Penola came up with a takedown out of the gates and then battled the rest of the way to secure his 13th win of the year.
Penola will meet the No. 8 seed at 197 pounds Friday night in Wyoming's Stephen Buchanan. The Cowboy sophomore was the runner-up in the Big 12 and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling 7-6 to top-seeded Myles Amine of Michigan.
Senior Max Lyon, junior Parker Filius and freshman Gerrit Nijenhuis all opened the third session with a win, but fell in the following round to bow out of the tournament. Lyon put up more bonus points in his first match Friday, posting a 10-1 major decision over Alan Clothier of Northern Colorado, but fell in his next bout to Ohio State's Rocky Jordan 2-0. Filius notched a 6-3 decision over No. 16 seed Cole Matthews of Pittsburgh to open his Friday, but ran into No. 8 seed Chad Red of Nebraska in the following round, falling by major decision, 11-3. Nijenhuis took out the No. 13 seed, Tanner Skidgel of Navy, in his first contest of the day, scoring three first-period takedowns on his way to a 7-4 decision. He came up short in his final match, taking a 3-1 sudden victory loss to Peyton Hall of West Virginia. The two freshmen had an incredible scramble off a Nijenhuis shot to finish the third period, in which the Boilermaker nearly scored, but time ran out and Hall was able to finish an attempt midway through the extra period and advance.
Senior Griffin Parriott and freshman Jacob Rundell saw their 2021 campaign come to an end in Session 3 as well, suffering losses in their first match Friday. Parriott was pinned by No. 16 seed P.J. Ogunsanya of Army in the third period, while Rundell surrendered a 12-3 major decision to No. 7 seed Lucas Byrd of Illinois.
Sophomore Kendall Coleman's Friday was over before it began as he medically forfeited out of the tournament after his injury last night in the second round against Jared Franek of North Dakota State.
The Round of 12 begins Friday night at 8 p.m. ET, and will be streamed on ESPN3, while the semifinals will air live on ESPN.
