WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Head coach Dave Shondell announced the hiring of Chad Sutton as Purdue volleyball's volunteer assistant coach.
Sutton comes to Purdue after serving four years as the head coach of Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota, Florida. With Sutton at the helm, the Cougars produced back-to-back state championship appearances with a pair of 22+ winning seasons. In 2019, he led the team to the 2019 3A State Championship title.
"Our entire staff is pleased with the addition of Chad Sutton as our volunteer coach," Shondell said. "Chad boasts a wealth of successful experience as a high school and club coach in the strong volleyball state of Florida. He is determined to help our team win while learning more about the day-to-day operations of a Division I volleyball program."
Additionally, Sutton guided Cardinal Mooney to the No. 23 ranked team in the nation according to MaxPreps in 2019, all while competing with the third-toughest strength of schedule in the nation.
"John Wooden once said 'the most important thing in the world is family and love'. Ever since I began talking to Coach Shondell and his staff about possibly coming to Purdue they have done nothing but treat me like family," Sutter said. "It is beyond obvious to me the culture and program at Purdue is special. Coach Shondell has built a program where there is a genuine love, care, and respect for one another. Hopefully one day I will be a great coach. More importantly though, I want to be a great person. I am confident joining the Purdue program will provide me with the direction to become both."
The 2019 Florida Dairy Farmers 3A Coach of the Year has produced 16 Division I-bound players in nine years and directed five top-5 AAU Nationals finishing teams.
Prior to his time with the Cougars, Sutton was club director for the Orlando Tampa Volleyball Academy from 2017-19 and head women's volleyball coach for Sarasota High School from 2011-15.
During his time as a head coach, Sutton took the reins of two programs with losing records and led them to program-best seasons.
Sutton joins the staff as previous volunteer assistant coach Val Nichol is committed to playing in the first-ever pro indoor volleyball league in the United States, set to begin play February 2021.
