Academic All-District Teams: Men / Women
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Swimmer Megan Johnson and golfer Joe Weiler have earned Academic All-District honors for continuing to excel in all aspects of the student-athlete experience through the completion of their junior years at Purdue.
Johnson has maintained her flawless 4.0 grade-point average as a health science pre-professional (pre-med) major from Fort Wayne. Weiler had a 4.0 GPA during the 2020 spring semester and has compiled a 3.86 cumulative GPA as a finance major from Bloomington.
After being among the regional honorees in District 5, both Boilermakers advance to the national ballot from which the Academic All-America teams are selected. District 5 includes universities in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.
Unlike many team sports, golf and swimming & diving are part of the at-large group for the Academic All-District and All-America program. Each school is permitted to nominate only four male and four female student-athletes for consideration from sports like tennis, wrestling, golf, swimming & diving, ice hockey, crew, lacrosse and others. Nominees must be at least sophomores with a GPA of 3.30 and higher. Honorees are nominated and selected via a voting process open to members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Purdue swimming & diving has had at least one Academic All-District honoree every year since 2010. However, this spring marks the first time since 2013 that the Boilermakers have had both male and female student-athletes earn Academic All-District honors among CoSIDA's at-large pool. Multi-year honorees Jamie Bissett (2013-15) and Lauren Gustafson (2011, 2013) were both recognized that year. Bissett was a diver and Gustafson excelled in the freestyle sprints.
Johnson is the Purdue women's first multi-year Academic All-District honoree since Gustafson, who continues to hold the program record in the 50 freestyle.
A first-team All-Big Ten selection this season, Weiler led the Boilermakers with a 72.05 stroke average in seven events (21 rounds) during the 2019-20 season. He finished with five top-20, four top-10 and two top-5 finishes during the seven events, posting a cumulative season score of 7-over par. Eleven of his 21 rounds were under-par or better, recording four rounds in the 60s.
His 72.05 stroke average ranks as the fourth-best scoring average in school history and his career mark of 73.79 is 10th best at Purdue.
Johnson specializes in the freestyle events, scoring the 200 free at Big Tens as a sophomore after qualifying for the NCAA Championships with Purdue's 800 free relay team in 2018. She ranks 12th all-time in program history in the 200 free (1:47.47) and has been part of Purdue top-10 times in the 400 and 800 free relays.
Johnson was one of four student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA on the women's District 5 team. She was joined on the team by fellow swimmers Erin Isola (Notre Dame), Talisa Lemke (Bowling Green) and Sarah Watson (Akron). Weiler was the lone golfer selected on the men's District 5 team.
