WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Six members of Purdue men's swimming are racing in Bloomington this weekend with an opportunity to earn a return trip south for next week's Big Ten Championships.
It will be an invitational-style format but feature more of a time trial focus, with morning preliminaries and afternoon finals both days. Action is set for noon ET and 6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday. Traditionally, only individual events are contested.
Representing the Boilermakers will be Kal Findley, Luke Ingram, Blake Ratliff, Brady Robinson, Michael Smith and Dale Williams.
The final four spots on Purdue's travel roster for next week's Big Ten Championships will go to the swimmers with the times most likely to score points in an individual event at Big Tens. Coaches Dan Ross and Brian Barnes have a matrix they utilize to determine those scoring probabilities.
This is the fifth season of an Indiana-Purdue collaboration for an in-state first chance meet, which is open to any schools around the Midwest that wish to attend. The meet returns to Bloomington this year after the Boilermakers hosted it the last two seasons. It's alternates locations on a yearly basis, unless one school is hosting the women's Big Ten Championships that year. That's how it ended up at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center in 2018 and 2019.
Will Schrensky (2017), Gabi Gomez Treig (2018), Ryan Lawrence (2018) and Ryan Hrosik (2019) are among the active Boilermakers to earn roster spots at the Big Tens Championships based on their first-chance performances in recent years. Hrosik went on to win the C final of the 50 free at Big Tens a week later and has since moved into third place in program history after posting a time of 19.51 in his premier event at the Purdue Invitational in November. Lawrence helped the Boilermakers' 400 free relay team eclipse the program record at Big Tens last season.
Indiana is hosting the men's Big Ten Championships this year for the first time since 2013. The Boilermakers' full travel squad will depart Tuesday for Bloomington and the meet is set for Feb. 26 to 29.
