WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Preseason Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index was announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today, featuring several Purdue athletes in the season's first rankings.
As a team, the Boilermaker men come in at No. 37, while the Purdue women are No. 62 nationally.
Individually, 10 Boilermakers earned national rankings, with seven in the top-16 and four in the top 11.
Senior Janae' Moffitt is No. 6 in the country in the women's high jump, thanks to a career-best indoor mark of 1.84 meters at the Boilermaker Invitational in 2017.
Junior Jalil Brewer comes in at No. 8 in the men's shot put. He earned his mark of 19.58 meters at last season's Big Ten Indoor Championships, where he placed second.
Additionally in the preseason top-16 national rankings are senior Jah Strange (No. 11) and junior Tamar Greene (No. 14) in the men's triple jump, junior Waseem Williams (No. 11) and senior Samson Colebrooke (No. 16) in the 60-meter dash and senior Jaret Carpenter (No. 14) in the 5000-meter.
Both team and individual rankings are mathematically calculated based on top career marks of athletes competing in 2020.
The national rankings for Colebrooke and Strange come after the duo were named the season's first Big Ten Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week on December 11. To open the 2019-20 indoor season at the Fred Wilt Open on Dec. 7, Colebrooke won the 60-meter dash while Strange notched a pair of runner-up finishes in the long jump and triple jump.
As a team, Purdue won 10 events in the season-opening meet at Lambert Fieldhouse. Four of the Boilermakers' 10 victories came from freshmen and three from sophomores. Additionally, three personal-best marks were set by returning student-athletes. Seven of Purdue's 10 wins also came with a second-place finish.
Up next, the Boilermakers return to action when they host the Gene Edmonds Memorial Invitational from January 10-11, at Lambert Fieldhouse. The two-day event will be the last home meet of the 2019-20 campaign, as Purdue hosts 13 teams for the two-day meet. Events on Friday, Jan. 10 will begin at 2:30 p.m. ET, and Saturday's competition commences at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free.
