EAST LANSING, Mich. – Purdue's (6-4-1, 2-2-0 B1G) first Big Ten weekend road series came to an end with a 2-0 loss to Michigan State (8-3-0, 1-2-0 B1G) on Sunday afternoon.
The rain was falling, adding to difficult playing conditions as water pooled on the field and the ball would come to sudden stops.
In the game, Purdue was out-shot 12-8 while Marisa Bova registered four saves in the net. Michigan State, coming off a postponed game on Friday night due to thunderstorms, produced the game-winner in the 10th minute of play.
Seven Boilermakers recorded a shot in the effort, led by defender Julia Ware with a team-high of two. The defensive line of Skylurr Patrick, Sydney Sparks, Grace Walsh and Ware all played the full 90 minutes.
10th Minute
Rebimbas took a hard shot from the top of the box, but it went wide left. A corner kick is earned by Purdue, but on a Michigan State counter-attack, a long pass up the field allows the Spartans to gain the advantage and score. 1-0 MSU
16th Minute
Sparks pressed on the gas pedal to sprint back for a developing one-on-one play for Bova and an MSU Spartan. Sparks sprint into the box and made the slide tackle to kill the play.
33rd Minute
Ena Sabanagic took a shot from 18 yards out, but the ball hits off the crossbar and out of play.
40th Minute
Bova came off her line to challenge a Spartan attacker. Bova dove to cover the ball and prevented the shot.
47th Minute
Sabanagic received a yellow card for dissent after she was called on a foul.
54th Minute
At center-field, Griffith attempted to send a pass up the field, however the ball hit a Spartan hand and a Purdue free kick is called. The Spartan had words for the referee and the yellow card is pulled.
69th Minute
Bova disrupted a dangerous Michigan State opportunity by diving to redirect a low cross meant for Spartan that was crashing the net.
79th Minute
Michigan State scored an insurance goal.
Purdue will return to action Thursday at Northwestern, for its third consecutive road match. The game is slated to kickoff at 8 p.m. ET.
