WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The third season of the Jeff Brohm era of Purdue football gets underway Friday, and if there is one buzzword (other than Rondale Moore, which is two words), it's consistency.

Since the conclusion of the 2018 campaign, the popular and personable Brohm has preached the importance of the Boilermakers avoiding that roller-coaster ride that personified them a year ago.

Three losses to start … followed by four wins … two defeats in the final three games.

"It's been our job as coaches all spring and summer and fall to get the players ready to go, put pressure on them, let them know that Game 1 should have been the first scrimmage, Game 2 should have been the second scrimmage," Brohm said. "Every day you have to be performing your best. Hopefully we've done that to a certain degree.

"I do think we've identified a lot of the mistakes we made last year, things that caused us to lose close games. I'm hopeful that we have learned from that to a certain extent, can take the field and not allow that to happen."

The Boilermakers open the 2019 season Friday at Nevada. Reno is in the Pacific Time Zone, meaning kickoff will be at 9:30 p.m. ET and at an elevation of about 4,400 feet above sea level. Consequently, the team will depart campus Wednesday evening to take advantage of an extra day to become acclimated.

"I think we're aware of what we're getting into," Brohm said. "That's one reason we're going out a little bit early is to make sure we get adjusted, to make sure we get a feel of the temperature and the heat, the altitude, the air level, all those things so that when we step on the field Friday, it's just playing football. Those are the things you have to wipe out and concentrate on your job and not on the other elements."

For Purdue, its offensive and defensive two-deep includes no fewer than 16 freshmen/redshirt freshmen. Youth will be served but without excuses.

"We're going to go up there and hopefully taking the field playing to win," Brohm said. "I'm hopeful that on both sides of the ball, as well as special teams, we are not scared to take chances.

"There's not one team on our schedule that if we don't play well and attack that we're going to beat. Nevada is in the same boat. They've got a lot of experience. They had some big wins this past year. They're well-coached. We will have our hands full going on the road. We're going to have to do our part to mentally and physically play hard for 60 minutes."

The Boilermakers' home opener is Sept. 7 against Vanderbilt. Kickoff is set for noon ET.
