Exhibition Play Concludes for Soccer

Purdue falls to Xavier, 1-0 in preseason play.


West Lafayette, Ind. – After possessing the ball over 60 percent of the game, the Purdue women's soccer team closed out exhibition play Saturday night falling to Xavier, 1-0.

While 12 Boilermakers tallied at least one shot, the sophomore defensive duo of Skylurr Patrick and Julia Ware led the team with two shots apiece.

Purdue dominated the second half stats, outshooting the Musketeers 9-3 and producing a 3-1 second-half corner kick advantage.
 
12th Minute
The Boilermakers recorded the first shot of the game with Hannah Melchiorre's attempt from the top of the box. Quickly after the save, Purdue earned its first corner kick, where Sydney Sparks' header landed high of the goal.

14th Minute

21st Minute
Defender Julia Ware joined the offensive attack after coming up the right flank. Powering through the defender, Ware capitalized on the opportunity to shoot, but the ball went wide right.

33rd Minute
As the Musketeer defense played keep away just outside the Xavier box, Sydney Duarte intercepted a pass. The sophomore took a couple touches to the top of the 18-yard box before placing a grounder shot to the lower left post, forcing a save by the keeper.

54th Minute
Purdue gained momentum in the second half, beginning with a quick succession of shots. Over the next minutes Purdue pursued six shots, including two from Patrick. With an organized Xavier defense, most of Purdue's shots were placed from around the 18-yard box.

74th Minute
Over the last minute, Purdue forced three fouls in the offensive half of the field. On the team's third free kick, Grace Walsh landed it on-frame and forced a diving save by the Xavier keeper.

89th Minute
In the final push for an equalizer, Ware sent in the final shot of the game on-frame, but it was not enough to overcome the first-half goal.
 
The Boilermakers will open official play Thursday, August 22 at Folk Field. Purdue is set to face Georgia at 7 p.m. ET. Admission is free to all Boilermaker soccer games.
