WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Head coach Norbert Elliott announced the 2019 cross country schedule, which will include five regular-season meets before heading to the Big Ten Championships.
"After the great 2018-19 year our program had, we designed a schedule that suits our team," Elliott said. "Our goal was to create a path that will best prepare us for Big Tens and NCAAs and I believe we achieved that. We will be competing at the same sites as the Regional and nationals during the regular season, which will be great to help the team familiarize themselves with the course."
The season is slated to begin Friday, August 30 with the Illinois Open, which Purdue has competed in for five consecutive years. Other appearances will also include the Nuttycombe Invitational and the Joe Piane Invite.
Following the Illinois Open, Purdue will travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, for the John McNichols Invite. "We're excited for the opportunity to compete again at Indiana State's cross country course," said Elliott. "Not only have they held numerous NCAA Championships there, but we were fortunate enough to have great success on both occasions we ran there last year."
A year ago, the Boilermakers walked away from the John McNichols Invitational with a victory on the men's side and a second-place finish for the women. In the postseason, Indiana State held the Great Lakes Regional, where Jaret Carpenter won the meet.
Purdue will wrap up the season with the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Nov. 3 in Columbus, Ohio. The meet, hosted by Ohio State, will mark the first time the Boilermakers have competed in the state of Ohio since the 2011 NCAA Great Lakes Regional was held in Toledo. Furthermore, the last time Purdue traveled to Ohio State for a meet was for the 2007 Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
Following the conference championships will be the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday, Nov. 15. The Boilermakers, who will be competing on Wisconsin's course for the Nuttycombe Invitational in October, will return to the course to vie for a spot at the NCAA Championships.
A season ago, the men's team produced one of its best campaigns in over a decade with a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships and a trip to the NCAA Championships (29th-place).
The Boilermakers are led by Carpenter, who was awarded Great Lakes Region Men's Athlete of the Year following the fastest time at the Regional.
