DES MOINES, IOWA - The Purdue track & field team travels to the 110th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa in its final test of the regular season.
The Drake Relays events will commence on Wednesday for the Boilermakers, beginning with the heptathlon. Thursday will host the distance events beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET while the remaining track and field events taking place Friday and Saturday.
The Boilermakers are coming off the Louisville Invite (4/13), where two Purdue freshman- Blanchard Montgomery IV and Camille Christopher improved their personal-bests to rise in the Boilermaker record book and check in at No. 3 in the 100m hurdles (51.07) and T-No. 6 in the 100m dash (11.59), respectively. As a whole, the women's team placed first in five events, while the men won four.
The men's program continues to make strides, beginning the outdoor season with three straight weeks among the nation's top 30 in the USTFCCCA rankings. Currently, the men are positioned second in the Great Lakes Region while the women sit in seventh.
In the men's 100-meter dash, Samson Colebrooke and Waseem Williams rank third and fourth, respectively in the Big Ten and No. 18 and No. 20 in the nation. The two are the fastest pair of runners the men's team has ever seen on a given roster in both the 100- and 200-meter events.
In addition to Montgomery and Christopher's success, fellow freshman and distance runner Tyler Bowling produced his first collegiate victory at the Illinois Twilight. Bowling knocked off 23 seconds from his seed time in the 5k and will compete in the 10k for the first time as a Boilermaker on Thursday.
Myia Dorsey is entering the meet following a pair of top-two finishes in Louisville. The junior won the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 55.36 seconds after earning second-place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.10. Dorsey will look to improve her time in the 200 at Drake, while also assisting in the relays.
Currently, an even 10 student-athletes from the men's and women's team each place in the Purdue performance list, excluding relays.
A year ago, the women's team placed first overall at the Drake Relays, while the men's team snagged fifth-place. Returners Shawndail McLaren, Williams, Malcolm Dotson and Jordan Hollis took first in the men's 4x200 with a time of 1:24.50 to claim the school's second title in the men's event and first since 2013. Furthermore, Dorsey and Samara Miller were members of the winning 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (3:47.99). Thrower Jalil Brewer took third in the shot put with a best of 18.17 meters (59-07.50).
Action will begin Friday at 11 a.m. ET with the women's long jump and men's javelin, followed by track events at 1 p.m. ET. Saturday will begin at 10 a.m. ET with the women's hammer throw and 11:40 a.m. ET on the track with the 4x200-meter relays.
