WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTCCCA) announced the recipients of the 2018 All-Academic honors, which included Purdue cross country runners Jaret Carpenter and Curt Eckstein.
Carpenter, a junior majoring in biochemistry, was previously voted the NCAA Great Lakes Region Men's Athlete of the Year following his first-place finish last November at the Regional. With the win, Carpenter secured his ticket to the NCAA Championships and helped the men's team to its first men's appearance in over 30 years.
Eckstein is a mechanical engineering major who also produced a top 10 finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The sophomore received eighth-place after collecting ninth-place at the Big Ten Championships.
"We are very proud Jaret and Curt," said head coach Norbert Elliott. "They exemplify Purdue's mission of developing scholar athletes."
In addition, the women's and the men's team received All-Academic Team recognition for their cumulative excellence in the classroom. As a whole, the women's team own a 3.56 GPA while the men a 3.32 GPA.
Since the cross country season concluded, Carpenter and Eckstein made their way into the Purdue indoor top-10 lists once again. Carpenter set two program records in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter run. Meanwhile, Eckstein burned 17 seconds off his personal-best in the 5,000-meter run to ascend to No. 4 in Boilermaker history.
