WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.
 – The Purdue swimming & diving teams are excited for the opportunity to spend the second half of their winter breaks in South Florida, returning to the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale for their biennial winter training trip.

As part of the trip, the swimmers are planning on competing at the FIU Sprint Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 4. Action begin at 10 a.m. ET at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center, an outdoor pool in North Miami. The FIU women have competed at the last three Purdue Invitational meets. The Boilermakers also raced at the 2016 FIU Sprint Invite during their last winter training trip to Fort Lauderdale.

Men's Swimmers: Dec. 29 to Jan. 9

During winter training trips, the Boilermakers traditionally hold daily two-a-day practices at Pine Crest's Schlesinger Aquatics Center. Dryland and weight training sessions between practices are also part of the daily itinerary. But there's still plenty of beach time as the teams' accommodations are within walking distance of the Atlantic Ocean.

Selected student-athletes will be chronicling their adventures and experiences in South Florida on the training trip blog here at PurdueSports.com. Nick McDowell, Courtney Kresl, Ryan Lawrence, Kelsey Macaddino, Nick Sherman, McKenna Jule, Liam Walker and Lindsay Turner have been selected to contribute to the blog. Blake Ratliff and Sydnee Emerson are the primary photographers.

The Boilermakers are traveling to Fort Lauderdale for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Student-athletes are required to cover a large portion of the cost of their airfare. Honolulu has also been a regular destination for Purdue's winter training trips. The current rotation of warm-weather destinations is tailored in such a way that a student-athlete has an opportunity to travel to both Honolulu and Fort Lauderdale during their four-year college career. In the other two years, the Boilermakers hold their winter training camp at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

With the fall semester curriculum commitments complete, the student-athletes have an opportunity to focus strictly on training over the winter break. The annual winter training camp helps the Boilermakers gear up for the spring semester portion of their schedules, highlighted by the championship season (mid-February through March).

The winter training camp is built on a combination of volume and intensity. The biennial trips also help build camaraderie and team unity. Oftentimes, lifelong memories are made on winter training trips. The underclassmen are experiencing a winter training trip for the first time while most of the upperclassmen went to Hawaii as freshmen or sophomores.

The FIU Sprint Invitational's format this year features 11 swimming events, with the spotlight on the 50-yard races in the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Those events will feature traditional heats to determine the top 8. An event winner will then be determined via a series of tournament-style races featuring the top 8 from the heats, top 4 from round 2, and top 2 from round 3. The final head-to-head race determines the winner.

The top four finishers per team in each event can account for points in the 16-place invitational scoring format. The 400 free relay is the longest event of the meet and the only relay on the schedule.

The Purdue men and women were both victorious at the 2016 FIU Sprint Invite, winning a combined 16 events. Allie Davis set pool records while winning the 200 and 500 free, earning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors for her impressive showing. She went on to win silver in the 200 free at the Big Ten Championships that season.
