ROSEMONT, Ill. – Purdue's swimming & diving's Emily Bretscher, Greg Duncan and Michael Juengel each won an event during the weekend of fall invitationals, earning a weekly honor from the Big Ten office and teaming for Purdue third's trio of weekly awards this semester.
Bretscher and Duncan swept the Big Ten Diver of the Week awards for the third time this semester. Overall, it was Duncan's conference-high fourth honor of the fall and fifth career. Bretscher was recognized for the second time this semester and for the fourth time as a Boilermaker. At IUPUI's House of Champions Invitational, Duncan was victorious on 1-meter and Bretscher won on 3-meter.
Juengel was honored as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his breakout meet at the Purdue Invitational. He won the 200 backstroke, was a three-time A finalist and scored in all four of his individual events. The South Carolina native joins Claire Abbasse, Keelan Hart and Mallory Jump as Boilermakers to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week this fall. Entering the season, the Boilermakers had not a Freshman of the Week honoree for the men or women since January 2018.
Duncan has joined NCAA champions David Boudia and Steele Johnson as the only Boilermakers to win Big Ten Diver of the Week four times during the fall semester. Both Bretscher (4) and Duncan (5) now rank fourth in program history with their career Big Ten weekly honors.
Bretscher's impressive comeback victory on 3-meter coupled with a team season-best score as the runner-up on 1-meter led to her Big Ten award. Her fifth event victory of the season featured a memorable surge up the leaderboard over the final two rounds. She ripped her final two dives of the 3-meter final, earning round-high scores of 72.85 and 66. The combined two-round total of 138.85 allowed her to rally for a 2.65-point victory after she trailed the leader by 16 points entering the penultimate round and by 6.15 points entering her final dive. Her winning list score was 347.35.
Duncan continued his strong season with his sixth victory and another season best. He won the 1-meter final by 36 points with a team season-best score of 391.6. He had the top-scoring dive in four of the six rounds and bested his previous season best by 16.45 points. On 3-meter, he finished 2nd to Miami's Max Flory by just .05 hundredths of a point – 384.20 to 384.15.
Juengel broke Purdue's freshman record while winning the 200 backstroke in 1:43.75, eclipsing a mark that had stood since 2011. He was also an A finalist in the 100 back and 200 IM. He posted NCAA provisional qualifying times & moved into the Purdue all-time top 10 in both backstroke events. In both medley relays, he swam the leadoff backstroke leg and helped those teams post top-10 times in program history.
Bretscher and Duncan have now teamed up to sweep the Big Ten Diver of the Week awards three times during their careers, the most of any duo of Purdue divers.
Next up for the Purdue divers is the USA Diving Winter Trials, set for Dec. 17 to 22 in Minneapolis. The Purdue swimmers are idle from competition until hosting Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 10.
