WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The recognition continues rolling in for freshman Kendall Coleman as he shared Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors Tuesday after his 157-pound title at the Michigan State Open. Coleman posted a 5-0 mark at the tournament with wins over a pair of top-10 ranked opponents and one other with a mark inside the top-25 at FloWrestling.
Coleman shares the weekly award with Ohio State's Luke Pletcher, who knocked off top-ranked Dom Demas of Oklahoma in the finals at 141 pounds. Coleman is the Boilermakers' first weekly conference honoree since 2015, when Danny Sabatello earned the award on Jan. 20.
Wins over Eric Barone of Illinois, Will Lewan of Michigan, Zac Carson of Ohio and Anthony Artalona of Penn launched Coleman into top-eight national rankings in every poll, including the No. 6 mark from FloWrestling and the No. 7 spot from TheOpenMat.com. Barone and Artalona held spots in the top-10 last week, ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, while Lewan was ranked No. 22 last week and climbed to No. 8 this week despite his loss to Coleman. Carson was a 2019 NCAA Qualifier for the Bobcats.
Coleman outscored his opponents 51-25 on the weekend, posting 19 takedowns while surrendering only three in five matches. He earned the first two falls of his college career, sticking Carson in the semifinals in addition to Tiffin's Hunter Langeloh.
The Boilermakers return to action Saturday, heading to the Albany, New York area for the 2019 Journeyman Duals. Purdue will wrestle three duals, set to face Buffalo, Utah Valley State and No. 8 Arizona State, starting at 10 a.m. ET at Hudson Valley Community College.
