WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue volleyball standouts Hayley Bush and Grace Cleveland garnered Big Ten weekly honors following a perfect week for the Boilermakers. Bush was named the Big Ten's Setter of the Week and Cleveland was named Player of the Week, marking the duo's first career honors.
Behind Bush and Cleveland's efforts, Purdue improved to a six-game winning streak with triumphs against No. 16 Kentucky, Texas A&M Corpus-Christi, Murray State and Eastern Michigan. Overall, Purdue stands at 8-1 on the season.
Pacing a Boilermaker offense that out-hit its opponents .322 to .171, Bush averaged 11.13 assists per set last week. She also added 28 digs, 15 errorless kills and seven assisted blocks. On Wednesday against No. 16 Kentucky, Bush recorded her third double-double of the season with 50 assists and 10 digs. The Union, Kentucky, native sustained her momentum, collecting her fourth double-double of the season with a season-best 52 assists and 10 digs against Eastern Michigan on Saturday. Bush concluded the weekend with Stacey Clark Classic all-tournament honors.
A crucial component of Purdue's winning offense, Cleveland led the Boilermakers with 59 daggers in 131 attempts and averaged 3.93 kills per set in last week's quartet of Boilermaker victories. The sophomore registered 15 kills against No. 16 Kentucky, while tallying a career-best 25 versus Eastern Michigan. Cleveland also added 19 digs, 16 blocks and three service aces on the week. Her efforts on the court tabbed her the 2019 MVP of the Stacey Clark Classic. On the season, she owns 123 kills and averages 3.51 per set with seven double-digit kill performances this season.
Bush and Cleveland are the first Boilermaker duo to receive weekly honors since Sherridan Atkinson and Ashley Evans garnered Player and Setter of the Week accolades Nov. 13, 2017.
The Boilermakers will look to carry their success into conference play as they open Big Ten action with visits to Wisconsin and Minnesota on Sept. 27 and 28.
