WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Boilermakers (5-2-1, 1-0-0 B1G) opened the Big Ten season with a victory at Folk Field, edging out Nebraska (1-5-2, 0-1-0 B1G) 1-0.
Freshman forward Leanna Rebimbas scored the game-winning goal, marking becoming just the fourth freshman since 2007 to score in the conference opener and just the second to record the decider (Kylie Hase, 2017).
With the win, goalkeeper Marisa Bova produced her fifth shutout of the season, after collecting one save in the second half. The Purdue defense limited Nebraska to just one first-half shot in addition to one shot on-frame during the entire 90 minutes.
11th Minute
Purdue earned its first corner kick of the game. On the serve, freshman Chloe Woodbeck took a shot, forcing the Cornhusker keeper to make a save.
14th Minute
The Boilermakers post back-to-back shots, which were both blocked by the Nebraska defensive line. First, Sydney Sparks took an attempt. On the rebound, Hannah Melchiorre fired one in, but it was also denied.
37th Minute
Rebimbas blocked the Nebraska goalkeeper's kick at the top of the box. The West Caldwell, New Jersey, native turned and shot the ball on an empty net. Purdue took the 1-0 lead.
81st Minute
Teagan Jones slid a sneaky backwards pass to Grace Walsh along the Purdue sideline. Walsh was able to dribble the ball into the Husker box, but the shot was scooped up by the keeper.
On Sunday, Purdue hosts the undefeated Iowa Hawkeyes (9-0-0, 1-0-0 B1G) at Folk Field. The game, which will serve as senior day, will begin at 1 p.m. ET.
