WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Three Boilermakers were recognized on the Big Ten women's soccer preseason honors list. Purdue honorees include junior captain Sarah Clark and sophomore defenders Skylurr Patrick and Grace Walsh.
Purdue is one of five Big Ten programs with only one upper classman honoree. While Clark, Patrick and Walsh started every game they appeared in, they also combined for over 4,700 minutes on the pitch.
Clark, who was elected captain for the 2019 season, led the 2018 squad in assists. Moreover, the Brighton, Michigan, native set the Purdue record for most penalty kicks made in a single season (three) and tied the most penalty kick attempts made in a season (three). Among them was the double-overtime golden goal Clark netted in the 105th minute versus Indiana.
As a freshman, Patrick ranked third on the team with 1,587 minutes on the field. Patrick accounted for the fastest goal scored by a Boilermaker in the season-opener, and the second fastest Purdue goal ever scored. A product of Lowell, Arkansas, Patrick went the distance in 11 of Purdue's 18 games and was just one of four Boilermakers to start every game.
Walsh joined Patrick as the only two freshmen to start every game they appeared in. Walsh enters her sophomore year after averaging 93.47 minutes per game and helping to shutout four programs, including No. 25 Northwestern on the road. The Kensington, Maryland, native was key in the double-overtime victory versus Indiana as well as non-conference victories against No. 24 Louisville and Georgia.
The 2019 Purdue women's soccer season is slated to start Thursday at Folk Field. The Boilermakers will host Georgia at 5 p.m. ET in the home opener, followed by Toledo on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. ET. Purdue's non-conference schedule is packed, with eight of Purdue's 11 opponents coming off an NCAA postseason appearance.
A year ago, the Boilermakers recorded the second-smallest scoring margin against Big Ten opponents in program history, with 10 of 11 B1G games being decided by one point or less. The 2019 schedule will have conference games run through Sunday, Oct. 27, where the Boilermakers will close the regular season against in-state foe Indiana on the road.
