Spring 2019 CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After combining for 48 Academic All-Big Ten honorees this season, it comes as no surprise that the Purdue swimming & diving teams garnered Scholar All-America acclaim for the second time of the 2018-19 school year.
Compiling team grade-point averages above 3.0 while raising those collective marks during the 2019 spring semester led to another set of Scholar All-America Team awards from the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America. The Boilermakers were also recognized by the CSCAA in January.
The Purdue women's GPA improved from 3.41 in the fall to 3.49 in the spring. It marks the fourth-straight semester the Boilermakers' have had a team GPA above 3.40. They ranked tied for fifth in the Big Ten during the spring. Twelve of the 13 teams recognized in the league had team GPAs of at least 3.42.
The Purdue men were among the nine teams recognized on the men's side of the Big Ten. They compiled a 3.02 team GPA in the spring, up slightly from their 3.01 mark in the fall.
The Purdue men and women consistently post team GPAs above 3.0 every semester to annually rank among the top squads in the Athletics Department in academic performance. The women's 31 Academic All-Big Ten honorees this season was a program record. The men had 17, just one shy of the team benchmark. Sophomores and older with cumulative GPAs of at least 3.0 earn Academic All-Big Ten acclaim.
Purdue swimming & diving's 48 Academic All-Big Ten honorees accounted for 23 percent of the Boilermakers' 210 total honorees across all sports for the 2018-19 school year. They were also the primary reason why the winter sports season produced 71 honorees, with those that call the pool home accounting for 68 percent of the winter honorees.
Ten of 15 Boilermakers that qualified for the NCAA Championships this year earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades. Individually, Megan Johnson (4.0 GPA through the end of her sophomore year) was named Academic All-District. Alex Clarke and Taite Kitchel were Purdue Athletics' female recipients of the Big Ten Medal of Honor and Big Ten postgraduate scholarship.
The CSCAA recognized a record 777 teams from 480 institutions in its Scholar All-America program for the 2019 spring semester. Women's teams posted a 3.45 median GPA, which the CSCAA cited as the highest mark on record. The men's median GPA was 3.23.
Big Ten Distinguished Scholars and the CSCAA's individual Scholar All-Americans are expected to be announced at some point in the next week.
