WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue track & field head coach Norbert Elliott is pleased to announce that Jim Garnham has been named Great Lakes Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
During his debut outdoor season with the Boilermakers, Garnham has produced three student-athletes who are headed to the NCAA championships in Austin, Texas. Through Garnham's leadership, freshman decathlete Isaiah Martin and the triple jumping duo of sophomore Tamar Greene and junior Jah Strange all earned at least one top-4 finish at the Big Ten Championships and will be representing Purdue on the national stage.
Garnham coached not just one, but both of Purdue's men's triple jumpers to podium finishes at the Big Ten Championships, leading Greene to the conference title and Strange to third-place finishes in both the triple and long jump. Martin was close behind, placing fourth overall in his event, breaking the facility record along the way.
During the 2019 outdoor season alone, Garnham paved the way for program top-5 marks from each of the triple jumpers and Purdue's decathlete. Moreover, Martin's 7,451 points earned at the Jim Click Invite was the most by a Boilermaker in over 20 years. Meanwhile, Garnham has helped to create one of the most formidable triple jumping teams Purdue has ever seen.
Garnham is preceded by Purdue assistant coach Angela (Goodman) Elliott, who earned the women's honor in 2015. With a history of excellence, the Boilermakers have earned four regional assistant coach of the year awards since it began in 2008.
Elliott, Garnham and the Boilermakers will close the season with the NCAA National Championships, taking place June 5 to 8, with the Purdue men competing on the first three days.
