JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On the final and busiest day of the NCAA East Regional, the Purdue men's track & field program advanced two relay teams and three individuals to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.
The men's 4x100-meter relay was the first to punch its ticket.
The team consisting of Tamar Greene, Justin Becker, Samson Colebrooke and Waseem Williams not only ran the fastest time at the NCAA Regional, but produced the fastest time in Purdue history, a facility record and the fifth-fastest time by any team in the NCAA this year at 38.75 seconds. Williams had an explosive anchor leg for the Boilermakers, surpassing NC State and breaking away for a sizable victory.
Fans held their breath as Purdue was disqualified following the race, however after the officials review, the call was reversed and the team reinstated as the No. 1 East Regional seed to enter the national championships.
The Boilermakers went 2-for-2 in its next pair of events, first qualifying Colebrooke in the 200-meter dash, then the triple jumping duo Greene and Jah Strange.
With Colebrooke's NCAA qualifying time of 20.46 seconds, he became the second-fastest Boilermaker in program history in the event. The junior shaved five one-hundredths of a second off his personal-best to place third in his heat for the automatic qualification and ninth-place overall finish.
Similar to Big Ten Championships, Greene went immediately from running in the victorious 4x100-meter relay team to competing in the triple jump. The triple jump Big Ten Champion earned his second ticket to the championships with an initial jump of 52-06.00/16.00-meters before electing to pass on his final two. The jump secured his spot on the big stage with the fourth-largest mark of the day.
Following Green in sixth-place was teammate Jah Strange. Strange, who needed a large final jump to advance to the national stage produced, jumping 52-03.25/15.93-meters on his third and final attempt.
The duo represents the only teammates in the event to advance out of Jacksonville.
Curt Eckstein was timed at 14:13.95 minutes in the 5,000-meter run and finished in 11th-place overall. Due to the advancing rules, Eckstein will just miss the cut (top five from each heat advance, plus the next two fastest times).
Meanwhile, Myia Dorsey, Brittney Campbell, Kyelah Hodges and Samara Miller produced the best 4x400-meter relay performance of the season. The squad lowered their season-best by over a second with their 3:34.07 mark and ran the fifth-fastest time in program history.
In the final event of the East Regional, the Purdue men's 4x400-meter relay secured a ticket to Austin in 3:05.43. The second-fastest time in Boilermaker history came on the backs of Shawndail McLaren, Colebrooke, Williams and Brian Faust. On the final lap, Faust edged out North Carolina by one one-hundredth of a second to take third-place in the heat and the automatic qualifier.
Every men's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay member who were entered in individual events as well punched their ticket in an individual event. In addition to Colebrooke and Green, Williams qualified Friday in the 100-meter dash while Faust advanced in the 400-meter.
The NCAA Championships will be held in Austin on June 5-8
