MAINEVILLE, Ohio - Senior Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri opened the 2019 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships with a round of one-under 71 at TPC River's Bend on Friday and is tied for first place after 18 holes, while the Boilermakers are tied for fourth place in the team standings at nine-over par, 297. Purdue trails the overall leader by six strokes, while Putri shares the top individual mark with two other players.
Putri had a strong finish to her opening round Friday, shooting three under over her final eight holes, including a birdie on the 18th and final hole of the day. The final birdie was one-of-five on the day for the Boilermaker senior as she took advantage on No. 1 and No. 9 on the front side and No. 11, No. 14 and No. 18 on the way home. The birdie on No. 14 was especially impressive as it was one of only five on the day on what played as the toughest hole on the course.
Despite a tough finish to the day, freshman RuQing Guan turned in the Boilermakers' No. 2 score at two-over 74. Guan was even par on the front nine, making birdie on No. 5, and moved to one-under par on No. 11 with her second birdie of the day. Fellow rookie Danielle du Toit played her round in opposite fashion, struggling on the front nine before a late recovery on her way to three-over 75. She made birdies on No. 11 and 12 and sank another on No. 16 before finishing with a pair of pars.
The fourth and final team score for the Boilermakers was shared by junior Micaela Farah and sophomore Inez Wanamarta at five-over 77. Farah struggled on the front nine and shot even par on the back, while Wanamarta made par on 11 of her first 13 holes but saw some adversity down the stretch.
Illinois owns the team lead after 18 holes, shooting three-over 291, while Ohio State and Indiana are tied for second at six-over par. Tied with Putri at the top of the individual leaderboard is Indiana's Kari Bellville and Illinois' Kornkamol Sukaree as only six of the 84 players in the field shot par or better.
Play resumes Saturday at 8:30 a.m. ET as the Boilermakers are expected to be paired with Michigan and Michigan State, and head on to the course at 9:24 a.m.
