STANFORD, Calif. – The Purdue track & field distance team is back at Stanford to compete at the Cardinal Classic Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20.
Seven Boilermakers are slated to compete across the men's and women's 5k and the steeplechase. The 5k will take place Friday night beginning at 10:33 p.m. ET, with the final 5k event schedule for 11:24 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, Saturday will host the steeplechase at 9 p.m. ET.
Purdue last appeared at Stanford three weeks ago at the Stanford Invite, where it went on to produce two times that rank among the top 3 in Boilermaker history. Curt Eckstein solidified his place as the second-fastest 5k runner in program history with his time of 13:56.63. The time was eight seconds lower than his previous personal-best and earned him 8th-place in the event. Heading into the Classic, the performance ranks Eckstein as No. 21 in the nation and No. 4 in the Big Ten.
In the Stanford Invite 10k, Jaret Carpenter bested the nation's top time heading into the day, clocking in at 29:18.14. The Boilermaker shaved off an astounding 32 seconds from his personal-best to rise to No. 3 in program history in the event and holding the No. 3 time in the conference.
Carpenter and Eckstein, which are the two fastest 5k runners Purdue has ever seen, will compete in the 5k alongside teammate Bailey McIntire. Emma Benner and Jenna Halderman are set to run the same event for the women. Benner leads the Boilermakers with the all-time fastest run of 16:17.83, set in 2017.
Gabrielle Broschard and Brody Smith will represent Purdue in the 3k steeplechase. Broschard's previous success in the steeplechase includes a time of 10:26.97 (No. 7 in Purdue history), set at the Big Ten championships a year ago. This season, the redshirt-senior was named B1G Women's Track Athlete of the Week following the Bill Cornell Spring Classic, where she ran the fastest steeplechase in the league at the time (10:59.76).
