TUCSON, Ariz. - The Purdue women's golf team had an up-and-down first day at the 2019 Arizona Wildcat Invitational, sitting in ninth place after 36 holes at Sewailo Golf Course on Monday. Sophomore Inez Wanamarta had the top individual effort for the Boilermakers, shooting four-over par, 148, and is tied for 11th place on the leaderboard, while freshman Danielle du Toit is in the top-20 as well, tied for 19th at six-over par, 150.
The Boilermakers struggled in the opening round, shooting 18-over par, 306, and sitting 14th in the team standings despite a solid individual score from du Toit. She shot one-over 73 with a trio of birdies to lead the team, while Wanamarta was two strokes back at three-over 75. Senior Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri and junior Micaela Farah had the other two team scores of the first 18, shooting six over and eight over, respectively.
They bounced back in round two, logging the third-best score in the field at 16-over par, 304. Wanamarta led the second 18, draining 15 pars and a birdie to finish one-over 73, while Putri finished well in round two with birdies on two of her last three holes to shoot four-over 76. Farah, du Toit and freshman RuQing Guan tied for the other team scores at five-over 77.
The day-one team lead is shared by Iowa State and UNLV at 18-over par, 594, with tournament-host Arizona one-stroke back at 19-over 595. UNLV's Elizabeth Prior leads the individual standings at three-under 141, holding a two-stroke edge over Arizona State's Alessandra Fanali.
The final round will begin Tuesday at 11 a.m., as the Boilermakers will play the final round with New Mexico State, Fresno State and Long Beach State.
